It's official, the PNG Chiefs have announced the signing of West Tigers star playmaker Jarome Luai as the inaugural player ahead of the club's entry into the NRL in 2028.
Luai, a four-time premiership-winning five-eighth, has committed to the club for the 2028 and 2029 seasons, with an option to extend his stay through 2030. He will be officially recognized as āCoded Player 001,ā marking the first signing in the franchiseās history.
A representative for New South Wales in State of Origin and a Samoan international, Luai is regarded as one of the gameās elite playmakers. His arrival is expected to form the foundation of the Chiefsā roster as they prepare for their debut season in 2028.
PNG Chiefs General Manager of Football Michael Chammas described the signing as a defining moment for both the club and Papua New Guinea.
āJarome is a world-class player and a proven winner. Securing his signature is a big step forward for our club and for rugby league in Papua New Guinea,ā Chammas said.
āHe embodies the style, passion, and competitiveness we want our team to represent.ā
Club officials believe Luaiās presence will not only strengthen the team on the field but also attract further high-caliber players, given his reputation within the sport.
Off the field, the signing carries broader cultural significance. Rugby league holds a unique place in Papua New Guinea, and Luaiās Pacific Island heritage is seen as aligning closely with the clubās identity and values.
Chief Executive Officer Lorna McPherson said the signing signals the clubās intent to build a competitive and culturally grounded organization.
āSigning a player of Jaromeās experience and quality sends a message that weāre serious about the development of this club,ā McPherson said. āHe shares our passion for rugby league and our commitment to representing PNG with pride.ā
Luai recently visited Papua New Guinea with his family, meeting club officials and experiencing the local culture firsthand, further cementing his connection to the teamās vision.
Chair, Catherine Harris added that Luaiās commitment reflects the values the Chiefs aim to embody.
āJarome puts family and culture first, just like our club. His signing represents everything the Chiefs stand for,ā she said.
The PNG Chiefs, who have already appointed key leadership roles including a head coach and recruitment staff, will continue building their squad ahead of their inaugural NRL campaign.
Luai is expected to play a central role in shaping both the identity and early success of the franchise as it prepares to enter the competition in 2028.
