JUFFA & DEKENA URGE EDUCATORS TO SPEAK UP AT 34TH SEOC
Minister for Education, Lucas Dekena, highlighted the significance of holding the Senior Education Officers Conference (SEOC) in Northern Province, emphasizing the government’s commitment to inclusive education, during the official launch at the Popondetta Independence Oval in Northern province yesterday, Monday September 22nd. “This is the first time the province has hosted such an important Ministry conference, and it also marks the first SEOC to be held after the nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary. By being here in Popondetta, we are also sending a strong message that education is for every province, every district, every ward, and every family. No child should be left behind, no matter where they are,” Minister Dekena said. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment under the National Education Plan 2020–2029 to ensure every child has access to quality education pathways. “We must ensure that every child has a clear and viable pathway from early childhood to fulfilling a career. This means strengthening foundational learning, making schools safe and inclusive, empowering teachers, and expanding alternate pathways through FODE, TVET, and higher learning,” Minister Dekena added. Northern Governor, Garry Juffa echoed the Minister’s emphasis on strengthening education and urged a “great reset” as Papua New Guinea moves into its next 50 years. “The world is changing rapidly with artificial intelligence and new technologies. Are we preparing our children to be not only citizens of PNG, but global citizens who can contribute meaningfully to the world?” Governor Juffa asked. Governor Juffa encouraged teachers to speak openly about issues affecting them and not to hold back. Both leaders emphasized that Papua New Guinean children are capable and full of potential, and realizing this potential requires empowered teachers, bold reforms, and united action. The 34th SEOC, held under the theme “Accessible Education Pathways for All,” has brought together over 100 senior education officers, including Provincial Education Advisors (PEAs), representatives from government agencies, churches, and development partners to discuss strategies for improving the national education system. The conference began on Monday, September 22nd, and will conclude on Friday, September 26, 2025, at Popondetta Secondary School, Northern Province.
