Before departing the country this afternoon, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres praised Papua New Guinea as a global example of democracy and climate leadership, during a farewell joint press conference with Prime Minister James Marape at Jacksons International Airport. The press conference marked the conclusion of Mr. Guterres’ four-day visit to PNG the first by a UN Secretary-General in the nation’s 50 years of independence. Prime Minister Marape welcomed the UN chief on behalf of PNG’s 10 million citizens, acknowledging his visit to Mount Hagen city where he met local leaders and beneficiaries of UN programs in health, education, and mental health. “You have certainly inspired us to lift our behavior as far as leaving no child behind and no place behind,” Mr. Marape said. He described the visit as a historic moment, strengthening PNG’s relationship with the United Nations, which it joined in 1975. Mr. Guterres expressed gratitude for what he described as the “warm and generous hospitality” he had received. He highlighted PNG’s political record as a model in a challenging global context. “Papua New Guinea is a country with 50 years of uninterrupted democracy. The Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea has opened its Senior National Final Trials today at the Taurama Aquatic & Indoor Centre, running until 7 September. The trials will decide Team PNG’s roster for the FIBA Melanesian Cup in Honiara, a key qualifier for the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti. This final phase follows a year-long selection process, beginning with the 2024 National All Star Championships in Goroka, before progressing through regional trial camps in Mt. Hagen and Port Moresby. Athletes will be tested through high performance benchmarks, on-court drills, game-based scrimmages, and player profiling to assess skill, fitness, teamwork, and resilience. Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab said the operations, which began last month, will continue through the Jubilee period, Christmas, and New Year. Police are working to end ethnic violence by stopping community fights and disputes that threaten peace. They are also prioritizing the protection of women and children, taking strong action against all forms of violence directed at vulnerable groups. On the city’s roads, police are stepping up traffic enforcement by cracking down on reckless drivers and removing unsafe vehicles. To address anti-social behaviour, officers are targeting illegal activities and disruptive conduct in public spaces that put residents at risk. Finally, police are ensuring that criminals face justice by putting more resources into tracking down offenders, making arrests, and holding them accountable. To strengthen operations, additional units including Mobile Squads, Dog Units, Water Police, Police Bands, Headquarters staff, and Police Reservists have joined NCD officers on the ground. Police have also partnered with the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) to clean up the city, remove illegal structures, control stray animals, and enforce liquor laws in order to reduce alcohol-related incidents. In recent weeks, police have tightened security for major events, including visits from Prime Ministers, the PNG Defence Force Week Military Tattoo, the 2nd Economic Zone Summit, and the arrival of the United Nations Secretary-General. The NCD Police Command has received six new vehicles from the NCDC to support policing and enhance community safety in Port Moresby city. The vehicles were handed over during a ceremony at City Hall attended by Governor Powes Parkop, government officials, business representatives, and community leaders. NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab thanked the NCDC for the support, saying the new fleet will complement the Commission’s Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) program and contribute to the government’s Medium Term Development Plan IV and the National Policing and Crime Prevention Strategy. “This is more than just a donation. East Sepik Governor Allan Bird has not only just joined the People’s Reform Party (PRP) but has also been appointed as its new Party Leader, in what observers say could be a significant reshaping of Papua New Guinea’s political landscape. The announcement was made Today Sunday 31st August 2025 at Dream Inn in Port Moresby city, where PRP founder and North Fly MP James Donald said the party’s executive unanimously endorsed Bird to take over leadership. “If Allan Bird is going to join the party, we also agree that he takes the leadership,” Donald declared, describing the decision as a sacrifice for the greater good of the country. Bird, who had been an independent MP for more than two years, said he had considered retiring from politics altogether. But the calls from his East Sepik constituents and the wider public convinced him to continue, including fellow Politician, Bryan Kramer. Governor Bird revealed that five political parties had approached him to join their ranks, but he set strict conditions before making a move. He said he wanted a party that must stand for reforms and was ready for action. The party must not be based in his Momase region, and the party must be led by ambitious, principled young leaders, and lastly the party must not carry “bad political baggage” from the past. “People’s Reform Party ticked all the boxes,” Bird said. “They have no history of bad decisions that I would have to defend. They are a clean slate.” Founded in August 2018, PRP is one of the country’s youngest parties. It first entered parliament in 2022 with the election of James Donald, who has led the party since its inception. The party’s emblem and colors are red, black, and white that symbolize courage in reform, strength in decision-making, and honesty in governance. By handing over leadership to Governor Bird, Donald said PRP was demonstrating humility and unity. “It is about dropping egos and seeing the bigger picture,” he told the crowd. In his maiden speech as PRP leader, Bird repeated his long-standing call for a “hard reset” of Papua New Guinea’s governance. He likened the country to a “sick patient in hospital” needing bitter medicine rather than “sweet promises.” “We are going to be honest with Papua New Guineans. Corruption is out of control, crime is out of control, young people have no opportunities. We need hard reforms, not easy talk,” Bird said. Tomorrow, 1st September, a total of 335 Grade 12 Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students from six National Schools of Excellence (NSOE) will begin their annual STEM examinations, marking a significant milestone for the fourth batch of students since the program’s inception in 2022. The exams, running until Friday, 5th September, will be taken at Sogeri NSOE (62 students), Aiyura NSOE (77), Passam NSOE (62), Wawin NSOE (39), Keravat NSOE (27), and Port Moresby NSOE (68). Students will be tested in Mathematics, Technology (ICT), Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Engineering. Secretary for Education, Dr. Uke Kombra, highlighted the importance of the STEM program in shaping Papua New Guinea’s future workforce. “This STEM exam is critical in identifying our top students who will later receive scholarships to further their studies overseas. STEM education is essential as we prepare a new generation of thinkers, innovators, and problem-solvers to drive our nation’s development over the next 50 years,” he said. Cricket Papua New Guinea (CPNG) has confirmed that Barramundis player Kipling Doriga has appeared in court in Jersey in the United Kingdom (UK) this week following an incident that occurred on Monday, August 25. Doriga pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery when he appeared before the Magistrate’s Court on the morning of Wednesday 27th August. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to return to Jersey’s Royal Court on November 28th for sentencing. In a statement released today, CPNG said the matter is being treated as an individual case and will not impact the team’s ongoing participation in the tournament. Officials have indicated that no further individual comments will be made at this stage, with CPNG emphasizing that the team remains focused on fulfilling its tour commitments. The Barramundis are scheduled to play two more fixtures in Jersey as part of their current tour.
