NEW BUIN DISTRICT HOSPITAL IN BOUGAINVILLE TO SERVE 50,000 PLUS
Australia provided a PGK76 million grant to develop the new Buin District Hospital serving over 50,000 people, celebrating Australiaâs continued support to the people of Bougainville.
The event was a groundbreaking ceremony focused on enhancing the health sector in the autonomous region of Bougainville.
The new Hospital will be part of a wider network of health facilities in Bougainville, supported by Australia, including health posts in Orami, Kodora, Karato, Kakusida, and a new health centre at Soroken.
Buin District Hospital when complete, will be able to provide the following
services:
Medical imaging and physiotherapy services.
Dental and surgical services,
Maternal and child health,
Accident and emergency,
General outpatient,
It will also include a Family Support Centre, a mortuary, and other facilities, in South Bougainville, as well as Solomon Islanders from the Shortland Islands who often travel to Buin for medical services.
Australia's funding for each health facility not only ensures healthcare access but also creates job opportunities and stimulates local economies, providing broader economic benefits for the communities.
Australia is dedicated to supporting Papua New Guinea's health sector, including funding for routine immunisation for children, strengthening HIV services, and providing strategic assistance to the Bougainville Department of Health.

KPHL TO HOST CHARITY GOLF TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CANCER TREATMENT
Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (KPHL) will host its annual Charity Golf Challenge to raise funds to once again purchase cancer treatment drugs at the Lae Golf Club, tomorrow on Friday 28th February 2025.
Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limitedâs Executive General Manager Corporate Affairs, Luke Liria, said the event is to support the National Cancer Services Unit at the ANGAU Memorial Hospital in Lae.
âPatients who are diagnosed at the Cancer Unit need medication for treatment and we understand that there are times when supplies of chemotherapy drugs are low, so proceeds of our golf tournament are purposely used to address that scenario.â
Liria stated that their annual Charity Golf Challenge aims to support the treatment for Cancer Unit patients at ANGAU Memorial Hospital in Lae by raising funds to purchase much-needed chemotherapy drugs.
Furthermore, Mr. Liria stressed that last year's charity golf event raised over K240,000 with participation from over 40 teams and anticipates similar support this year, with teams coming from Port Moresby and the Highlands.
Kumul Petroleum Holdings hosts this annual event in February to coincide with World Cancer Day, bringing corporate organizations together for a worthy cause, to support cancer awareness and raise funds.
In addition to the Lae Charity Golf Challenge, KPHL has supported the installation of radiation therapy equipment, including a brachytherapy unit, at the National Cancer Service Unit at ANGAU Memorial Hospital last year.

UPNG ACKNOWLEDGE POTENTIAL IN THIS GENERATION | 4TH ANNIVERSARY
The UPNG School of Business and Public Policy (SBPP) representative Mr. Samson Psalmist Maim acknowledged the legacy of Sir Michael and the immense potential of todayâs generation in shaping the nationâs future.
Mr. Maim addressed this at the University of Papua New Guineaâs 4th Commemoration of the Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare on the 26th February 2025.
Drawing inspiration from biblical references, Mr. Maim likened the transition of leadership from Sir Michaelâs generation to the present as the shift from a âMoses leadershipâ to a âJoshua generation.â
Mr. Maim stressed that while the pioneers of PNGâs independence (Moses leadership) had fought tirelessly to free the nation from colonial rule, the responsibility now rests upon the younger generation to continue this journey and reclaim the nation from corruption, greed, and socio-economic struggles.
Mr. Maim quoted biblical passages that encouraged courage, confidence, and faith, urging young Papua New Guineans to step into leadership with strength and determination.
He emphasized that leadership is not about personal gain but about serving the people and fulfilling a collective vision, encouraging youth to embrace wisdom, integrity, and resilience as they strive to build a better Papua New Guinea.
His speech reinforced the belief that todayâs generation has the power to drive change and shape a prosperous future.
"The legacy of Sir Michael Somare remains a guiding force, inspiring young leaders to take responsibility and lead with vision, courage, and purpose."

UPNG ACTING REGISTRAR PAYS TRIBUTE TO GRAND CHIEF ON ANNIVERSARY
The University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) Acting Registrar, Professor Lekshmi N. Pillai, delivered a heartfelt tribute at the UPNG's fourth commemoration Ceremony of Late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare at UPNG Forum Square in the evening of the 26th February, 2025.
His speech reflected on Sir Michaelâs enduring legacy and his pivotal role in shaping Papua New Guineaâs (PNG) independence and national unity.
Professor Pillai expressed his personal reflections on the Grand Chief, acknowledging his brief yet meaningful encounters with Sir Michael during the latterâs frequent visits to UPNG.
He emphasized the unique qualities that earned him the title "Father of the Nation." He posed the question: Why is he called the Father of the Nation?"
The answer, he stated, lies in his unwavering dedication to Papua New Guineaâs independence and unity.
"Sir Michaelâs journey began in 1936, and as he matured, he recognized the need for independence from Australia."
"In 1968, he embarked on a mission to gather like-minded individuals who shared his vision."
"By 1973, he successfully convinced the Australian government to agree, in principle, to PNGâs independence."
"However, the journey was far from over, as many Papua New Guineans were uncertain and unprepared for self-governance."
"Despite resistance, Sir Michael took it upon himself to travel across the country, instilling confidence in his people and uniting them under a common purpose,â said Prof. Pillai.
Professor Pillai highlighted the Grand Chiefâs foresight in prioritizing cultural unity. Recognizing Papua New Guineaâs vast diversity of over 850 languages and numerous tribes.
He elaborated that Sir Michael sought to strengthen national identity through cultural preservation.
This vision led to the our Independence in 1975, till today reaching our 50th Independence Anniversary.
Professor Pillai further expressed his appreciation for the organizers of the event, commending their efforts as a successful 4th commemoration for UPNG.

24 UPNG ADVENTIST STUDENTS LEAD OPENING OF 4TH COMMEMORATION OF GRAND CHIEF
The Adventist Tertiary Students Association (ATSA) opened the University of Papua New Guinea's 4th Commemoration for Sir Michael Somare, this evening 26th February 2025, at UPNG Port Moresby.
UPNG marked the 4th commemoration of the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare with a solemn and patriotic ceremony held at the UPNG Forum Square, and opened by 24 ASA members who led the national anthem and a flag-raising ceremony.
The ceremony began with an opening prayer by TSCF representative Mr. Lawson Peter Sim, setting a reverent tone for the occasion.
The Adventist students then took center stage, showcasing national pride through a short parade and singing of the national anthem, including a leg-racing activity, highlighting the unity and respect that students hold for the countryâs founding father.
The event served as a moment of reflection and remembrance for the legacy of Sir Michael Somare, who played a crucial role in Papua New Guineaâs independence.
It was a day to honor his contributions and reinforce national identity among students and attendees.
The UPNG community continues to uphold his memory through such commemorations, ensuring that his vision and leadership remain an inspiration for future generations.

BSP CAPITAL SUPPORTS KOKI PRIMARY WITH ESSENTIAL DONATIONS
BSP Capital donated essential Education Resources to Koki Primary School in NCD, upholds it commitment to improving communities, as a subsidiary of BSP Financial Group Limited (BSP).
BSP Capital's donation included computers, a printer, a monthâs worth of internet data, and two water tanks, benefiting over 1,300 students as part of BSPâs Community Project initiatives addressing two key focus areas: healthy hygiene and digital awareness.
BSP Capitalâs Senior Portfolio Manager, Abigail Pepson, emphasized the donationâs impact, addressing the need for clean water and digital learning tools.
She noted that the new water tanks would ensure sufficient clean water for students and teachers amid rising enrolment.
She further explained the importance of digital resources in modern education.
âComputers will enhance studentsâ digital literacy and support online research.â
âAdditionally, they will assist teachers in preparing learning materials, which is currently done by hand.â
These contributions address two key focus areas: Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) and Digital Inclusiveness.
Darren Terupo, BSP Capitalâs Portfolio Manager and Community Project Manager, reiterated BSPâs commitment to education.
âWe recognise that many schools nationwide lack basic services, and teachers often go the extra mile to provide quality education despite these challenges.â

KENNEDY GROUP OF COMPANIES SUPPORTS TUBUSERIA PRIMARY FUNDRAISER
Kennedy Group of Companies (KGC) displays warm support to the Tubuseria Primary School with K30,000 and 62 bags of Rice towards their fundraiser aimed at constructing a six-in-one classroom.
The joyous occasion was witnessed by the Tubuseria Village in Central Province as the KGC stepped forward to support Tubuseria Primary Schoolâs major fundraising event.
During the event, KGC representatives of KCK Rigo Rice Cup CEO Mr. McSteve Polly emphasized the importance of education as a pillar of community development, reinforcing their commitment to educational growth.
"Education is the foundation of a strong community."
"When you educate a child, you uplift an entire village," he stated.
The donation included K5,000 from the KCK Rigo Rice Cup, another K5,000 from Rigo Rice, and a generous K20,000 contribution from North Lakes Estate.
The 62 bags of Rigo Rice were given to the school to sell, with all proceeds directly supporting the schoolâs development.
Beyond education, Mr. Polly also highlighted the role of sports in shaping young minds.

"We encourage young people to not only pursue education but also explore their talents in sports," a representative shared, referencing the KCK Rigo Rice Cup, a national rugby competition backed by the company.

TALAI SPARTANS CAPTAIN EMBRACE VICTORY IN LEG-2 GRAND FINAL | KCK CUP
The Talai Spartan Captain Mr. Peter thrilled embraced with victorious win over the Vadatau Brothers 18-8 in Leg-2 Grand Final in the KCK Rigo Rice Cup 2025.
The Talai Spartans Captain Mr. Ako Peter stated that despite a draw 6-6 in the first half of 40 Minutes, the Talai Spartans consumed all their remaining strength with a single goal to bring home the win, crossing the try line by force wining 18-8.
Mr. Peter emphasized that the team preparation was key which we fulfilled before the game in camping together and focusing on how to go about the game today.
He mentioned that although errors were experienced throughout the full 80-minutes match, we had to polish up which led to our victory.
âWe were unfortunate in the Governors Cup, but today our team worked really hard to take this win, and I am very proud of my boys for their undying effort to keep the game alive into full time,â said Mr. Peter.
Mr. Peter expressed his gratitude to his teammates, Team Management and sponsors for their support throughout the leg-2, especially the community support and fans who have left home to witness the grand final.
He further expressed his journey of 10 years without a Grand final win since 2015 in Moresby South Rugby League and was pleased to be the victors during this grand final.
The Talai Spartans Captain Mr. Peter remains committed to be true to his role in and off the field, maintaining his teams discipline inline to be resilient and dedicated towards their goal in the Top 12 finals.

MSS RECRUITS OVER 500 YOUTHS TO COMBAT YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT
The locally owned Masol Security Service (MSS) successfully conducted a final parade with over 500 newly recruited youths for, including more than 200 female participants for job opportunities to combat youth unemployment.
The event was witnessed by the communities around the borders of Hohola and Tokarara, where the parade took place, opposite the New Testament Church in the presence of MSS Owner Mr. Mathew Sokoli and MSS General Manager (GM) Mr. Billy James.
This event under the leadership of MSS General Manager (GM) Billy James and owner Mathew Sokoli, marked a significant step in MSSâs ongoing efforts to combat youth unemployment and foster professional development in Port Moresby.
During the event, the MSS GM Mr. James underscored the company's dedication to creating job prospects for young people in the city.
He reaffirmed MSSâs mission to empower the youth, providing them with not only employment but also a sense of purpose and responsibility.
Mr. James stressed that this initiative aligns with broader national efforts to address the pressing issue of youth unemployment.
By engaging young individuals in meaningful and professional roles, MSS is playing a crucial role in reducing crime rates and enhancing community safety.

âDespite having a standard qualification from grade 12, Diploma or even a Degree for work, not all qualified people find work and this initiative embraces the unfortunate and gives a chance to start a professional career."
Mr. Leo further stressed that the local Masol Security Service is a generous and giving establishment that holds and empowers youths strongly.
The final parade followed three rigorous induction sessions designed to equip the recruits with essential security standards, ethics, and workplace discipline.
These sessions aimed to prepare the youths for upcoming employment opportunities in the security sector and beyond.

S.S DOLPHINS TAKE 3RD PLACE IN KCK RIGO RICE CUP LEG-2
The S.S Dolphins secured a well-deserved victory in the KCK Rigo Rice Cup, defeating the Buria Reds 16-8 to claim third place in the tournament.
The thrilling contest showcased the Dolphinsâ strength, strategy, and determination today 23rd February at the Bava Park, Port Moresby.
Right from the start, the Dolphins took control of the game with Ita Paisoi opened the sinking a penalty kick in the 8th minute, setting the pace for his team.
However, the Buria Reds were quick to respond, with Guba Vagi scoring a try with a failed conversion in the 32nd minute to keep his team in the game.
Despite the Redsâ efforts, the Dolphins continued to dominate possession and executed well-structured plays.
Just before halftime, Moses Aralu crossed the line in the 37th minute but failed the conversion, giving his team a solid lead 6-4, boosting their confidence going into the second half.
The Dolphins remain dominant showing no signs of slowing down with strong offensive plays paying when Jacob Sarea alongside Tipson Tulija, extending their lead with two with 30mins of the first, further strengthening their hold on the game.
Despite the Dolphin's lead, the Reds maintained the stance with a desperate attempt to fill in the gap score with Guba Vagi scoring his second try in the 32nd minute.
However, the Dolphinsâ defence remained resilient, denying their opponents any further scoring opportunities, seal their win in the final minutes to Full time.
The Dolphins dominated the Full 80minutes with a 16-8 margin victory.

The Bava Park Feld 1 crowds witnessed an intense draw of 6-6 between the Grand Finalists, Vadatau Brothers and Talai Spartans at the end of the first half.
