Veteran striker Raymond Gunemba has been named captain of the Papua New Guinea Kapuls as they prepare to defend their MSG Prime Minister’s Cup title on home soil next month.
The Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) today announced the four national squads that will represent the country at the upcoming tournament, which runs from November 10 to 22, 2025, in Port Moresby.
The event will feature the fourth edition of the Men’s MSG Prime Minister’s Cup alongside the inaugural Women’s MSG Prime Minister’s Cup, marking a historic step for football in the Melanesian region.
Matches will be played at the Sir John Guise Stadium and PNG Football Stadium, with additional exhibition games scheduled at Lae’s Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium on November 16, bringing the excitement to fans in Morobe Province.
Papua New Guinea will compete in four divisions:
- Men’s Senior National Team (Kapuls) – defending champions after their 2024 victory in the Solomon Islands
- Women’s Senior National Team – participating in the first-ever Women’s MSG Prime Minister’s Cup
- Men’s Development Team (U23)
- Women’s Development Team (U20)
Gunemba, one of PNG’s most experienced and respected players, will play a crucial leadership role in guiding the Kapuls as they aim to retain their title before a home crowd. His inclusion highlights PNGFA’s strategy of blending experience with emerging talent.
PNGFA President John Kapi Natto said hosting the tournament and fielding four national teams reflects the nation’s growing strength and depth in football.
“It is an honour for PNG to host the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup and to see our men defending their title on home soil under the leadership of one of our most respected players,” said Kapi Natto.
“This tournament also marks a historic milestone for women’s football in Melanesia, with the launch of the inaugural women’s competition.”
The national squads will assemble for training camps in the coming week under the supervision of the PNGFA Technical Department.
