PM PLEDGES FULL SUPPORT FOR CYCLONE DEVASTATED MILNE BAY ISLANDS

Prime Minister James Marape has reaffirmed the National Government’s full support for relief, recovery and long-term rebuilding in Milne Bay Province following the destruction caused by Tropical Cyclone Maila.

Speaking after meeting with provincial leaders and disaster officials in Alotau, Marape said the Government stands in solidarity with affected communities.

“Milne Bay was directly in the cyclone path, with some areas experiencing prolonged impact from the eye of the storm,” he said. “This is one of the most severe weather events our country has faced, and many especially in the outer islands, are enduring extreme hardship.”

The Government has released K5 million in emergency relief funding for the province, with an additional K1 million allocated to each of the four districts.

“This support will address urgent needs such as food, water, medical supplies, and temporary shelter,” Marape said. “Our response must be swift, coordinated and ensure no community is left behind.”

National resources have already been deployed, including PNG Defence Force patrol boats, helicopter support for aerial operations and coordination through the National Disaster Centre with partners such as the United Nations and the Australian Government.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the challenge of reaching remote island communities, which make up most of Milne Bay’s population.

“Access is difficult, but our responsibility is clear. Within the next week, we aim to reach all affected areas by sea or air,” he said.

Marape also indicated he plans to visit some of the worst-affected islands.

“I want to stand with our people on the ground and assure them that help is here and more is coming.”

He said recovery efforts will extend beyond immediate relief to rebuilding homes, schools, and health facilities, with a focus on resilience.

“We must rebuild stronger and smarter. Climate change is real, and our coastal and island communities are on the front line,” he said.

A preliminary report will be presented to Cabinet next week to guide further recovery and funding measures.

Marape praised the people of Milne Bay for their contributions to the country, saying the nation stands united with them.

“For generations, Milne Bay has contributed greatly to Papua New Guinea. Today, the whole country stands with you,” he said.

“You are not alone. Together, we will respond, recover and rebuild.”
