MINISTER FEO WELCOMES START OF PNG CHIEFS VILLAGE CONSTRUCTION

Minister for Sports, Kinoka Feo, has welcomed the start of construction on the PNG Chiefs Players’ Village, describing the project as a key milestone in the country’s preparations to join the National Rugby League (NRL).

Minister Feo said the development would provide a dedicated home for players, staff, and their families as the PNG Chiefs prepare for their planned entry into the NRL in 2028.

The minister acknowledged several partners involved in the project, including PNG Chiefs CEO Lorna McPherson and businessman George Constantinou, chairman of the Constantinou Group, as well as representatives from the Australian High Commission in Papua New Guinea.

Minister Feo said the Players’ Village would include family accommodation, shared community spaces, and support facilities designed specifically for a professional rugby league club.

“Creating the right living environment for players and their families is critical to building a successful team,” Feo said.

“This village will help ensure the PNG Chiefs become a club that elite players from across the region and the world will be proud to join.”

The project forms part of broader preparations underway in Port Moresby as the country gets ready to host its first NRL team. Feo said work was already being undertaken across the city to upgrade infrastructure and facilities ahead of the team’s entry into the competition.

He acknowledged the role of National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop and Foreign Affairs Minister Justin Tkatchenko in supporting the preparations, along with other partners working to ensure the capital is ready for the expected influx of fans, visitors, and international attention.

Feo also recognized the support of the NRL leadership, including chairman Peter V'landys and chief executive Andrew Abdo, as well as backing from the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

Feo said, “Rugby league is the heartbeat of our nation. The PNG Chiefs will become a powerful symbol of pride, opportunity, and unity for Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific.”

He also thanked the Constantinou Group for its investment and for creating employment opportunities through its developments, including hotel construction and other business ventures.

He further stated that the groundbreaking ceremony marked only the beginning, with further investments in infrastructure, facilities, and programs expected in the coming months as Papua New Guinea prepares for its historic entry into the NRL.
