The Tourism and Hospitality graduate achieved the highest cumulative GPA among her cohorts, earning her this distinguished accolade from TPA. The TPA award is a prestigious recognition given to graduating Tourism and Hospitality Department students who excel academically. Marissa's outstanding performance earned her a commemorative plaque, a mobile phone, and a K2, 000 cash prize. During the graduation ceremony, Ingrid Kuman, Acting Chief Executive Officer at TPA, presented the award to Marissa Siwa and praised her dedication and hard work, as evidenced by her outstanding academic achievements. "The prize provided to the student is in recognition of their hard work and academic commitment to the THM program and is a testament to their perseverance to achieve their goal." The Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA) strongly condemns the recent attack on tourists at Roku Beach, Central Province, including the brutal killings in the Upper Highlands region, and the kidnapping of a helicopter crew in the Hela Province. These heinous acts not only devastated communities and local service providers but also had significant repercussions on the tourism sector in PNG. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the PNGTPA, Mr. Eric Uvovo spoke on the effects of negative publicity on tourism in the country. “PNG has faced a torrent of negative publicity, not only from these incidents, but also from the ‘Black Wednesday’ civil unrest that caused an inferno of international media coverage casting a shadow over the entire country, and painting an inaccurate picture of Papua New Guinea as an unsafe destination for travelers.” Since the January 2024 riots, the PNGTPA research team has been monitoring travel advisories and media coverage from key source markets, and reports indicate that PNG has since been flagged as an extremely high security-risk destination, particularly for Americans, Australians, and Chinese visitors. In fact, the tourism industry is already being impacted by the growing public awareness of the country's law and order issues, said the CEO. This was evident when two major cruise lines that were scheduled to visit the country this year had to cancel their PNG cruise itineraries due to the January civil riots and looting. “In light of the serious law-and-order issues traumatizing our country’s economy, we seek immediate intervention by the PNG Government to curb the surge in violent crimes. Normalcy must be restored to encourage consumer confidence in PNG as a tourist destination. Papua New Guineans must also be responsible law-abiding citizens, demonstrating respect, duty-of-care and national pride – all this contributes to a safer society – not just for tourists, but for everyone residing in Papua New Guinea.” “In the meantime, the PNGTPA commends the government for continuing to have our country's borders open, we also commend our tourism industry who have shown an incredible amount of resilience during these difficult times," said the CEO. Ten (10) students from the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), Pacific Adventist University (PAU) and the PNG University of Technology (PNGUoT) are the recipients of Ok Tedi Mining Limited’s (OTML) 2024 Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme (USS) with a funding commitment totalling over K300, 000. The 2024 batch of USS awardees from UPNG (1), PAU (2) and PNG UoT (7) are in their third year of study from various disciplines. The disciplines include Geology, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Communication Engineering, Applied Physics, Mining Engineering, Mineral Processing, Surveying, and Geotechnical Engineering. OTML has paid a total of K310, 307.54 to the three universities under the USS program. Of the amount paid, UPNG received K18, 515, PAU received K78, 172, and PNG UoT received K213, 620.54. The number of awardees is based on the relevance of their study disciplines to OTML work applications. The scholarship covers: • Full Tuition & Boarding Fees for the year • A stipend • A book allowance • Travel assistance • Industrial Training • An automatic offer into the two-year Graduate Development Program upon successful completion of studies with excellent academic and behavioural performance in the final year. OTML's Undergraduate Scholarship Award Scheme supports high-performing students studying at PNG's tertiary institutions in disciplines relevant to OTML work areas. The Program aims to assist university undergraduate students with school fees and other associated costs, while also ensuring that OTML maintains an industry-institution relationship with the universities that provide graduates for its training programs and workforce. Beginning in 2007 and reintroduced in 2023 following a hiatus after 2014, OTML has invested over K830, 000 in the USS program, sponsoring 60 undergraduate students so far.

The YUMIFM PNG MUSIK AWARDS is back for another year to recognize the local artists and their contributions to the music industry in Papua New Guinea (PNG) with awards in the various categories, including the prestigious Justin Kili Award sponsored by KEYNOTE. Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) celebrated World Book Day at all its Library Learning Centres this week. The children learnt all about the many types of books and reading materials that exist, some children even were dressed up as books such as dictionaries, Atlas, Newspaper, Clinic book and the Bible and gave a little presentation of what those books are for. BbP stated that there were lots of shared reading, stories read by teachers and some children who are already well on their way to independent reading. “The most important purpose of World Book Day is recommending books to each other and sharing stories.” “Providing children with access to borrowing books is a great way to improve their overall literacy levels and vocabulary. “ BbP also expressed delight in seeing children engaged in activities that involved using one’s imagination and also appreciated parents for their effort and participation. “The 5-year old children came dressed as their favourite book character.” “It was nice to see children enter a world of fantasy and have a chance to change the learning environment to one which is more playful and imaginative.” “BbP is grateful to parents around the country for providing the children with such wonderful costumes.” BbP's Library Learning Centres each have over 3, 000 books to choose from, including over 25 titles published by the organization that feature PNG children in leadership roles. Buk bilong Pikinini enthusiastically marked World Wildlife Day on March 5th at its schools/ library learning centres (LLCs), with a particular focus on the diverse range of wildlife found in Papua New Guinea. To engage students, a variety of fun activities were arranged, including the use of PNG animal plush toys generously provided by BbP’s donors CPL and Brian Bell. BBP stated that through hands-on exploration with these toys, children were able to explore and learn more about various local wildlife found in the country, specifically the cuscus, tree kangaroo, bird of paradise, cassowary, and pig-nosed turtle. “During the interactive sessions, the students were encouraged to identify and discuss the different body parts of these animals, learn about how they utilize them, and imitate the unique sounds they make.” “Additionally, the young learners gained valuable insight into the natural habitats of these wildlife species and their geographical distribution within PNG.” Incorporating literacy into the celebration, the students enjoyed reading BbP's published book titled "When I Grow Up, I Want to be a Zookeeper", which highlights the remarkable wildlife of Papua New Guinea. Furthermore, the students expressed their creativity by partaking in a colouring activity featuring the "Animals of PNG" in the BbP's activity book. This colouring book will serve as a wonderful resource throughout the year, aiding them in learning about the diverse array of animals indigenous to PNG and their cultural significance. The fun-filled event was further elevated as children created and adorned delightful animal face masks, adding an exciting touch to their wildlife exploration journey.

The Kolowi Lem Phonics School located in Hewa, Wanakipi, Hela Province was founded in 2019 by Mr. Jessy Ken who is currently a 2nd year student, studying for a bachelor's in mathematics at the University of Goroka (UOG). Ken initially completed his Grade 12 in 2018, returned to Wanakipi, where he built a classroom and self-funded Kolowi Lem Phonics School. “Ever since I started building this school I haven’t gotten any community support or government support. “ “I had taken pictures and put it to Facebook groups Koroba Kupiago Current News Update (Team William Bando), and also the Hela Political forum.” “But even so, I still did not receive any support from the Hela Provincial Education Board – it was all funded by me through raising and selling pigs.” Ken’s drive to build a phonics school arose when he realized that his brothers and sisters did not have access to education. “The school is currently in operation but it's unregistered – I’ve been trying to register my school into the education system.” When asked about teachers, Mr. Ken humbly responded stating that the only instructors teaching at the school were himself and a former classmate. “As soon as I finished Grade 12, I started the school and was the head teacher there, I never completed any short courses in education or anything else of the sort, and I just started teaching.” “Another teacher is one of my former classmates in Grade 11 – he did not complete his Grade 12 –but he is now taking up studies at FODE (Flexible Open Distance Education).” According to Ken, there were no government services where he resided. “Kolowi Lem Phonics School is the first school in my area – there was no Primary School or Elementary School prior to this.” “Hence my students are not just very young children, I even teach teenagers –my students are between the ages of 3 – 21 years old and some of them are even married.” Currently he is seeking help from the government and to anyone who is able to make a donation to his school. “I really need help and support, since 1975 till today, our location hasn’t seen any good development – no health centres, no schools or roads.” Kolowi Lem Phonics School has been running for six years now.

The Australian Government through its PacificAus Sports program has partnered with the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee to support 33 elite athletes from Papua New Guinea in their preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Australia’s support will assist PNG athletes to compete across seven sports including athletics, swimming, boxing, weightlifting, taekwondo, breakdancing and rugby 7s. Australia continues its commitment to promoting greater inclusion of women and girls in sport at the highest levels and is pleased that 15 female athletes will be supported through this program. This includes weightlifting golden girl Dika Toua, long jumper Rellie Kaputin, boxing’s Sheila Yama and the women’s rugby 7s national team. Australian High Commissioner John Feakes stated that Australia is proudly investing in partnerships for elite sports in PNG through the PacificAus Sports program. “I will be keenly watching their qualifying competitions ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.” Secretary General of the PNG Olympic Committee, Desmond Kavaigu welcomed Australia’s support. “The support from the PacificAus Sports program is not just about funding; it's about building a legacy of excellence, inclusion, and friendship among our Pacific communities." Meanwhile PNG long jumper, Rellie Kaputin expressed his thanks towards Australia for their support. "I'm very grateful to again have that level of support as I prepare to represent not only Papua New Guinea, but my region at the Paris 2024 Olympics."
