Speaking to PNG HAUSBUNG, Retail Shop Manager, Timothy Eddie was pleased seeing many regular customers coming as well as new ones. “A lot of our customers were eager to know about the shop’s location.” “Some even expressed delight knowing that services were now closer to their residence which was convenient – particularly for the working class who reside Downtown.” “It was now easy for them to purchase attire for formal events or daily wear.” He added that Jacks of PNG’s team is currently working on a project in Kokopo. REMOTE SCHOOLS TO RECEIVE GREATER FINANCIAL SUPPORT REMOTE SCHOOLS TO RECEIVE GREATER FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Education Minister Lucas Dekena recently announced that remote schools in the country will receive greater support financially as part of the Marape/Rosso Government’s 2025 Free Education Policy. This geographically influenced reform uses the PNG Access Remote Index (PARI) to distribute funds, enabling remote schools to obtain necessary resources in order to provide quality education to students. Dekena said this is due to the 2012 tuition fee grants that were distributed evenly without taking into consideration the accessibility of schools in different locations. “This policy will adjust to reflect the locality of schools in 2025," he said. Based on a study conducted by the 2024 Department of Education, schools were categorized into six groups of accessibility: Highly Accessible, Accessible, Moderately Accessible, Remote, Very Remote and Extremely Remote. With this information, schools in hard-to-reach locations will receive more financial support compared to urban schools in the Nation’s Capital. He said 80% of funds allocated will be strictly for operational grants, while 20% will cater for essential science and mathematics resources. Furthermore, project fees will proceed to be supported beneath the K160 million Family Assistance Package, with grants straightforwardly distributed into school accounts. Schools must also have the approval of the Provincial or National Education Board prior to collecting any additional parental contributions for projects. The Minister strongly advised school leaders to be responsible while managing government funds and encouraged collaboration with local authorities to address specific needs, such as boarding costs in both the high and secondary schools.

RESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM: A NATIONAL IMPERATIVE RESPONSIBLE JOURNALISM: A NATIONAL IMPERATIVE
Minister for Community Development, Religion & Youth & Minister Responsible for Censorship, Jason Peter recently spoke on the importance of media as well as addressing the dangers of graphic publications and false reporting. “The media plays an important part in nation-building, and its contributions to our country's development and progress are much appreciated.” “However, recent instances of explicit content release and misleading reporting have sparked major alarm.” “While I recognize the value of media freedom in our democracy, I am also concerned about its misuse, notably the publication of graphic photos and deceptive headlines.” “A recent publication with disfigured bodies and a dramatic headline serves as an example.” “Such content not only lacks decency and good taste but also presents a terrible image of Papua New Guinea to the international community.” Portrayals in media can misrepresent PNG to foreign audiences, harming the country’s reputation. As PNG celebrates 50 years of Independence, positive narratives should be shared to promote unity and pride. “As the Minister responsible for the censorship function in Papua New Guinea, I appeal to the media fraternity to exercise greater care, sensitivity, and respect in their reporting.” “While the right to media freedom is enshrined in our National Constitution, it must be balanced with responsibility and an understanding of the potential impact on public perception and national interest.” He urged all media practitioners to adhere to the highest standards of ethics and professionalism in their work. “The revised Code of Ethics and Professional Practice, launched last year, provides a robust framework for responsible journalism.” “It is crucial that all media houses actively implement these guidelines to ensure that their reporting serves the public good while upholding the dignity and integrity of our nation.” “Let us work together to promote a media landscape that is not only free but also fair, accurate, and responsible.”

MARTIAL ARTISTS DEMONSTRATE PROGRESS & SUPPORT MARTIAL ARTISTS DEMONSTRATE PROGRESS & SUPPORT
Another step for martial arts as Kung Fu Instructor Andrew Molen was given much-deserved recognition for receiving the title of ‘Sifu’ by his teacher, Steven Ngandang Sifu of the PNG Shaolin Kung Fu Wushu School. This took place on January 11, 2025, during East Gate Karate Academy’s open day, a day which witnessed martial artists coming together to support each other and promote their community's values. Molen has been training martial arts and competing in combat sports for the past twenty years, and the endorsement of his peers, Senesis Byron Chan, Chief Instructor of the Dragon Karanas Mixed Martial Arts Club and Julius Piku, the Chief Instructor of East Gate Karate Academy, gave him much-deserved recognition to pursue his aspirations of creating a club and carrying on the martial arts lineage. Sensei Byron stated that Sifu Andrew has years of training and expertise as both a martial artist and a combat sport athlete, and he was pleased to honor Molen's accomplishments. As part of this endorsement, Sensei Byron bestowed Molen the rank of Second Dan Black Belt in the International Dragon Full Contact Self Defense Sports Federation system. Molen will also lead Kung Fu and Wushu training at Sensei Chan's club. Sensei Julius also expressed his support for Molen and thanked Sensei Byron for continuing to support and promote martial arts amidst his busy schedules. “At East Gate Karate, we are always delighted to launch people off to a good start and see them become successful in their endeavors.” He stated that martial arts have a vital part in forming people's character as they face various life situations. However, martial artists have challenges in their work due to a lack of resources, support, and, most critically, cheap space to run their programs. "We also produce athletes for sports, but without good venues, we are unable to contribute fully in that way." He believes it is always beneficial to collaborate with other martial artists and support one another throughout trials like these. Martial artists and their clubs should not be divided by style, politics, or personal ambition. Sensei Byron also announced the formation of the World Taekwondo Organization (WTO) in Papua New Guinea, where he has been named President. He is also the President of Japan Shotokan Karate-Do International in PNG. Sensei Byron and his club are linked to various international organizations for martial arts, self-defense, and combat sports. These associations aim to create pathways and opportunities for his students and members. Meanwhile Steven Tommy, Senior Instructor of Dragon Karanas Mixed Martial Arts Club and Vice President of WTO PNG, also received a Third Dan award during the event. Other students also received new ranks after a recent grading in 2024. Sensei Byron encourages young people to practice martial arts to develop discipline and character while using their free time wisely. He urges martial artists and style leaders to collaborate and enhance their skills. The meeting marked the start of classes for East Gate Karate Academy and Dragon Karanas MMA for 2025. All new and current students should attend training with their instructors. Sifu Molen will soon open his club as well.

TSC Chairman Samson Wangihomie once again emphasized the importance of vigilance among educators, especially those who have recently graduated, to avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes aimed at deceiving them for financial gain. “These dishonest individuals are preying on unsuspecting teachers, contacting them via WhatsApp and utilizing deceitful tactics such as requesting registration fees and falsified pay statements in exchange for services. “ “TSC does not operate any formal accounts or payment platforms for payroll services; all assistance provided by TSC is entirely free of charge.” “Therefore, teachers are strongly advised not to engage with any WhatsApp numbers claiming to represent TSC or make any payments to bank accounts that may be associated with fraudulent activities.” It is crucial to remain vigilant and protect oneself from falling victim to scams that could harm both financially and professionally. By staying informed and heeding these warnings, teachers can safeguard themselves and their colleagues from potential exploitation by scammers seeking to take advantage of their trust and vulnerability.

TSC CHAIR CALLS FOR TEACHERS LEAVE FARES TO BE PAID TSC CHAIR CALLS FOR TEACHERS LEAVE FARES TO BE PAID
Chairman of Teaching Service Commission, Samson Wangihomie, gave a strong message to the Provincial Education Divisions recently, calling for all teachers leave fares to be paid. Wangihomie stated that it was a must that teachers be getting their leave fares as they are entitled to it for their services. He further explained that the responsibility of ensuring that teachers receive their leave fares is with the Provincial Governments. When asked to clarify why there was a delay with teacher's leave fares, Wangihomie suggested that insufficient funding could be the cause. He further clarified another reason could be that when it comes to married couples who work in the public service, only one partner receives leave fares. "If both the husband and the wife are in public service, only person re- ceives leave fares." He added that teachers not receiving their rightful payments creates issues for the provinces and for the country. "Letting teachers go unpaid in their leave fares, becomes a liability to the state." "Provinces are having a lot of liabilities which are adding up to millions - entitlements such as repatriations after retirement and outstanding salaries." Approximately 70, 000 teachers are expected to resume duties on January 20th, 2025. That includes nearly 2500 new graduates and new commencement teachers to teach within the various teaching sectors- Early Childhood Education, Primary, High/Secondary, Vocational, National Schools of Excellence, FODE and Inclusive Education for the 22 provinces.
