POLICE COMMISSIONER CONDEMNS TRIAL BY MEDIA
The Commissioner of Police, David Manning, has condemned the recently leaked details of Police Search Warrant to media, regarding the raid to the Department of Finance under the Waigani Court District Authority.
Commissioner Manning shared this in statement describing the unauthorized efforts as “trial by media” that may hinder police investigations, following the unauthorized release of a police operation to the media by a third-party.
The Commissioner’s comments follow sensationalized claims by the media in relation to the lawful execution of a search warrant at the Department of Finance on 6 August 2025.
While acknowledging the presence of media was the result of the unauthorized release of information by a third-party to journalists, the National Fraud & Anti-Corruption Directorate carried out a routine search warrant at the Department of Finance,
Moreover, Commissioner Manning emphasized that the Waigani District Court issued a warrant to seize evidence of alleged criminal offences by a public official at the Department of Finance, investigators secured and executed it under the Search Act to ensure the documents’ admissibility, and police identified themselves on arrival and carried out the search professionally within the warrant’s scope.
“The search was conducted without obstruction, and no force was used to gain entry into Department of Finance premises.”
Manning further condemned attempts to sensationalize investigations and insisted that police inquiries proceed unhindered and strictly follow standard procedures.
“I condemn these attempts to conduct trial by media. Releasing information about an ongoing investigation risks the integrity of investigative processes and prosecutions.
“In this instance, a third-party has been identified as notifying the media of the execution of a routine search warrant. This serves only to impede police processes and unnecessarily jeopardize potentially sensitive investigations.
“Enquiries are now underway to confirm the identity of the party responsible for jeopardizing the investigation.
Furthermore, Manning warned against sensationalizing police work or obstructing inquiries and urged people to report crimes and leave investigations to law enforcement. He confirmed that the investigation by National Fraud & Anti-Corruption Directorate remains ongoing.

NAGL Claims Officer Mr. Levi Kariko, pointed out the uplifted burden of upfront payment for members and convenient access.
“Importantly, it also alleviates the burden of upfront payments for our members, making healthcare more accessible and convenient. We are grateful for the collaboration and extend our sincere thanks to CPL for making this partnership possible,” said Mr. Kariko.
The partnership reflects a broader effort to bridge the gap in healthcare affordability and access by leveraging private sector collaboration and innovation.

LAHANIS EDGE OUT WIGMEN ON HOME GROUND
The Bintangor Goroka Lahanis defeated the Kroton Hela Wigmen 22-14 in a tightly contested match at the National Sports Institute in Goroka, Eastern Highlands province.
The home side came out firing, dominating early territory and possession. Fitler Omena opened the scoring with a swift finish in the corner, quickly followed by a powerful effort from Paluse Ake. Moments later, Cyborg Oliver powered through the middle, giving the Lahanis a commanding start with their third try in the opening quarter.
Charlie Buka nailed two out of three conversions, stretching the lead and lifting the home crowd’s energy.
Meanwhile, Wigmen showed class and grit under pressure. Norman Brown responded with a well-timed burst through the line, and Siki Konden followed up with a determined finish near the posts. Simon Arana added two conversions to keep Hela within striking distance.
A crucial penalty goal from Lote Kuman kept Wigmen breathing down Lahanis’ neck, and the final minutes turned into a defensive warzone. The Lahanis held their line with fierce determination, repelling every Wigmen attack in the dying moments.
Both sides showcased determination and defensive intensity, but it was Goroka’s early blitz and disciplined structure that carried them across the line. The Lahanis' composure under pressure and home-ground edge proved just enough to edge out a dangerous Wigmen outfit.
The win boosts Lahanis’ momentum heading into the latter stages of the 2025 season, while Wigmen will be left ruing missed chances in what could’ve been a comeback victory.

DABARIS DEMOLISH MIOKS IN THE CAPITAL
The Gas Resource Central Dabaris delivered a dominant performance in the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup, dismantling the NPL Enga Mioks 40-10 in a one-sided Round 16 at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby city over the weekend.
The Dabaris Dominated the First Half until it was too late for the Mioks to come back in the second Half.
From the outset, the Dabaris asserted full control, unleashing an effective offensive display that overwhelmed the Mioks' defense. The score run was led by Willie Bire early, followed by a smooth double act from Ismael Rodney and Sydney Koi that set the tone for a clinical first half.
The second half was no different as Elijah Kimba, Heni Rawa, and the explosive Nathan Kora added to the Dabaris' tally. Kora, in particular, was a standout, scoring twice and kicked six conversions from seven attempts to that anchored the Dabaris’ scoreboard dominance.
In contrast, the Mioks struggled to find their rhythm and were largely kept scoreless until the dying minutes of the match. Joshua Philip and Joel William managed consolation tries late in the game, with William converting one to avoid a shutout. However, the damage had long been done.
The Mioks' frustrations were evident, with Junior Talin sent to the sin bin in the first half for ill-discipline, further compounding their woes.
It was a complete and commanding performance from Central Dabaris, fast, ruthless, and calculated, showcasing their growing unity and threatening form.
For the Mioks, it was a humbling defeat that underscores the work required if they hope to regain momentum.

TIGERS CLAW EAGLES IN LAE SHOWDOWN
The Lae Snax Tigers roared to a 26-18 triumph over the Wamp Nga Mt. Hagen Eagles in a spirited and action-packed Round 16 clash of the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup at the Lae League Ground over the weekend.
The Tigers came out firing on home turf, with Kevin Yako setting the tone early with a clinical try that got the Lae crowd roaring.
After a tense back-and-forth, the second half saw the Tigers unleash a flurry of attacks, with Samson Tobe and Mark Alunga striking within minutes of each other. Yako added a second try to his tally before Jaran Pitten powered over to seal Lae’s fifth try.
Alunga was equally effective with the boot, slotting three of four conversions to give the Tigers breathing space as the match wore on.
The Eagles, however, didn’t fold easily. Stuard Manda responded with two sharp tries in quick succession, keeping the visitors within reach. Anthony Pepna added another late in the game, and Sakias Komati showed composure with a perfect 3-from-3 conversion rate.
Moreover, discipline unraveled in the final minutes, Komati and Henry Wan were both sent off, derailing the Eagles’ chances of a late comeback.
While both teams displayed brilliant attacking skills, it was the Tigers’ consistency and tactical execution in key moments that made the difference. With their defensive structure holding firm and their backs exploiting every gap, Lae held off a determined but undisciplined Eagles outfit.
This win strengthens the Tigers’ stronghold on home soil and strengthens their charge toward the finals as they secure the second position on the Points Ladder Board.

CLRC REVIEWS MERCENTILE ACT 1953 & PUBLIC TRUSTEE ACT 1951
The Constitutional and Law Reform Commission (CLRC) recently conducted a two-day workshop, focusing on the review of the Mercantile Act 1953 and the Public Trustee Act 1951.
CLRC conducted an in-depth two-day workshop under its Colonial Law Review Program (CLRP).
The CLRP plays a vital role in fulfilling the CLRC’s mandate, reviewing laws passed on Papua New Guinea’s independence and determining their relevance to the nation’s current legal and developmental priorities.
Both the Mercantile Act 1953 and the Public Trustee Act 1951 were merged into the PNG Constitution at independence in 1975, reflecting their colonial origins and the interests they served during that era.
The Mercantile Act 1953 addresses aspects of commercial law, including debt assignments, powers of attorney, and voidable transfers, with the intent to prevent fraud in business transactions.
The Public Trustee Act 1951 governs the administration of deceased estates, trusts, and insolvencies, designating the Public Trustee as the statutory trustee.
The workshop was led by CLRC Deputy Secretary for Legislative Services, Mrs. Dorothy Mimiko-Kesenga, and CLRC Principal Legal Officer for Colonial Law, Ms. Sandon Kikala.
The two days facilitated in-depth discussions incorporating these laws, identifying areas for potential reform. Stakeholders, including Bank South Pacific (Legal Unit), the Office of the Public Trustee, the Department of Lands and Physical Planning, and the Department of the Prime Minister and National Executive Council (Legal Unit), provided valuable insights.
Key focus areas included policy frameworks, functional clarity, and the resolution of ambiguities; in relation to key terms used throughout the legislation.
CLRC Secretary Dr. Mange Matui emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach to legal reform.
"We are providing this platform for discussion; as an independent law reform agency, we can assist in this space. Reforms must be holistic, considering related laws to ensure our recommendations do not conflict with other existing legislations," said Dr. Matui.
The feedback gathered will inform the development of a Position Paper, which will be submitted to relevant agencies with recommendations for legislative reform.
