PCNC COMPETITION ENTERS WEEK TWO
The Private Companies Netball Competition (PCNC) kicked off its second round of matches over the weekend on Sunday 19th January, at the Rita Flyn outdoor courts in Port Moresby city, much to the excitement of netball fans.
According to PCNC President Julie Mai, the competition is made up of organizations right across the country with the goal to network, interact and bond and having a good time.
“Although we work from 8-5, many times we are not interacting with each other (our own colleagues), so this is a fun space for us to network and bond with other organizations, with our colleagues. And through sports, it has helped us to work together as a team not only on the courts but on the field.”
Mai acknowledged Voda Fone PNG for coming on board again as the golden sponsors of the 2025 PCNC with a sum of k15, 000.
She said PCNC always sustained itself through its affiliation fees but with the sponsorship from Voda Fone PNG for this season, they were able to include service providers such as the National St John Ambulance and a physio on site to attend to any injuries during matches throughout the duration of the competition.
“We had to bring in the services of the physio and the National St John Ambulance so that we can physically attend to injuries or issues and make sure that our workers are in good health before they take the courts.”
With the finals to be played in March, Mai is urging all teams and players to adhere to the rules and regulations to avoid being penalized.

PUBLIC SERVANTS NETBALL COMPETITION UNDERWAY
The Public Servants Netball Round 2 matches kicked off this Saturday (18th January) at the Rita Flynn Courts much to the excitement of netball fans.
President of the Public Servants Association Mary Nauga said, the teams taking part in the tournament compromises of public sector departments in NCD.
“The different departments in NCD form a team and come and compete every year. Our season starts in October and then ends in February depending on the number of teams that we have.”
Nauga said, for this year, they are looking forward to wrapping up the games on a high note because the Public Servants Netball Association will be celebrating its 35th Anniversary.
“This association has been around for the last 35 years. So, this time around, we want to make it bigger and better and invite the other departments to come on board and participate as well.”
The focus for the tournament is to keep the working class and/or public servants fit and healthy and to create a space for them to let lose, relax and have a good time on the court before another working week.
There’s a total of 37 teams and 47 clubs in each of the 7 divisions.
Nauga mentioned that the teams compromise of not only the public servants but their families as well taking part in the competition, making it a more enjoyable getaway from office stress before another work period.
The finals are anticipated to be played on the 1st of March which is likely to take place at the Sir john Guise indoor complex followed by the presentation night (a first of its kind) on the 8th of March and are most likely going to host it at Lamana Hotel.
Nauga further stated that registration payments have been slow and today is the closing date.
“Registrations quite slow. Most of the teams have paid up but we are just waiting for the other departments to pay because obviously the government departs have difficulties getting funds around this time of the year, so we’ve given them a grace period and today is the end of it. We are just hoping that all the teams have paid their fees by now.”
“The competition runs on the revenue that come from the registration which is K1000 that covers the venue hire, we pay for our umpires and the balls and equipment’s.”
So far, the turn outs have been good but are hoping to field more teams on the empty courts soon.
Nauga is also calling for sponsors to come on board and support their competition in the next season going forward.

GOVT COMMITTED TO BETTER SUPPORTING TEACHERS
As Papua New Guinea nears its 50th anniversary of independence in 2025, Prime Minister James Marape has announced significant increases in teacher pay, reaffirming the government's commitment to the country's education.
Speaking recently at the University of Goroka's (UOG) 28th Graduation Ceremony, the Prime Minister outlined his vision for a more powerful future powered by educators' empowerment.
“Our teachers must be among the highest-paid public servants in our country,” Prime Minister Marape said.
“It is simple rationale that teachers must be looked after. That’s why I come to you today, to tell all of you here—future teachers—and those already serving in the field, that on the 50th anniversary of our nation’s independence, teachers’ work conditions, and remuneration will be one of our key priorities.”
Prime Minister Marape’s address was a powerful reminder of the critical role educators play in nation-building. As Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate 50 years of independence, his message resonated with the graduating class and attendees alike—a call to action for the nation to uplift its teachers and, in doing so, secure a brighter future for all.
The Prime Minister reflected on his tenure as Education Minister in 2008 and 2009, during which he pushed for teachers’ pay to reflect their qualifications—a policy now being implemented by the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) and the Department of Education.
In a moment of inspiration, he emphasized the profound influence educators have on shaping the nation’s future.
“It is logical. If we want to incubate a better Papua New Guinea, we must look after our teachers at all levels—from elementary teachers to university lecturers. I give this commitment as part of the reform strategies we will announce on September 16, 2025, our nation’s 50th anniversary. Teachers’ working conditions will be improved so you can serve our country without fear or favor, adhering to your code of conduct and ethics as patriots strengthening our nation through the students who pass through your hands.”
Quoting Proverbs 22:6, Prime Minister Marape reminded the audience of the timeless wisdom in nurturing future generations: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
In a major announcement, the Prime Minister committed to easing the financial burden on aspiring teachers.
“I also want to announce to all students training to become teachers in our country that, from 2026 onwards, your government will pay your full tuition fees.”
“Any Grade 12 school leaver who chooses to become a teacher can rest assured that your tuition will be fully covered by your government. Provincial governments, districts, or other sponsors can assist with boarding and lodging, but the full tuition cost will be borne by your government. This applies to those pursuing early childhood education, primary and secondary teaching, and even college and university lecturing.”
The Prime Minister went on to outline key expectations for the teaching profession under the new reforms.
“The Government is committed to improving the welfare of teachers by increasing their pay and covering their school fees for those who choose to pursue teaching as a profession. However, with this commitment comes a responsibility. The Teaching Service Commission will ensure that all teachers employed meet the highest ethical and professional standards.”
“We do not want individuals with questionable character — such as gamblers, habitual troublemakers, or those engaged in unethical practices — influencing our children. We want to build a new culture within the teaching profession, one that prioritizes decency, discipline, and professionalism. Teachers must carry themselves in a manner that sets a positive example for their students, both inside and outside the classroom.”
Drawing from his personal experience, the Prime Minister highlighted the impact of teachers on his own life.
“I am a product of the teachers who instructed me from Grade 1. Their discipline, guidance, and example played a significant role in shaping my character and values, which I carry with me to this day. It is this same level of commitment and influence that we expect from today’s teachers.”
Prime Minister Marape also called on the Education Department to collaborate with universities to fast-track teacher training programmes.
“I urge the Education Department to work closely with institutions such as the University of Goroka, University of Papua New Guinea, and PNG University of Technology to quickly roll out programmes that will address the teacher shortage. For graduates in specialized fields, a one-year diploma in teaching can equip them with the necessary skills to enter the classroom quickly.”
He concluded by reaffirming the Government’s commitment to increasing both the number and quality of teachers across the country.
“We are committed to increasing the number of teachers in our country, but it’s not just about quantity — it’s about quality. We will ensure that teachers are well-trained, well-supported, and held to a high standard so they can give their best to the students and to the country.”
“The teaching profession is a noble one, and we want to make sure that every teacher understands the critical role they play in nation-building. By investing in teachers, we are investing in our nation’s future. In return, we expect teachers to uphold the highest standards of conduct and professionalism to inspire the next generation of leaders.”

UOG COMMENDED FOR RECORD GRADUATION AMID CHALLENGES
Despite major obstacles, such as the devastating earthquake in 2022 that destroyed important university infrastructure, Prime Minister James Marape has commended the leadership of the University of Goroka (UOG) for their outstanding efforts in raising student enrollment and reaching a record-breaking graduation turnout.
Speaking at the 28th Graduation Ceremony of UOG on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Prime Minister Marape acknowledged the resilience and commitment of the university’s Vice-Chancellor and Chancellor in adhering to government directives to expand student enrolment. He highlighted that since the government took office in 2019, UOG has significantly increased its graduating class, with over 1,009 students graduating this week — the highest in the university’s history.
“When we took office in 2019, the University of Goroka had a graduating class of just around 400 students. Today, I am proud to witness the largest graduation in the university’s history, with more than 1,009 students receiving their qualifications this week,” Prime Minister Marape said.
“This achievement warms my heart. It shows that despite the earthquake that destroyed classrooms and accommodations, the university leadership has steadily increased enrolment year after year.
Their determination to comply with government policies and their ability to deliver results with limited resources deserve recognition and continued support from the Government.”
The Prime Minister commended UOG for its unwavering commitment to expanding educational opportunities, noting that the university’s administrators have remained focused on growth, even in the face of adversity.
“Results like this make us want to continue supporting public servants and administrators who implement central government policies and deliver tangible outcomes. The leadership at UOG is doing exactly that — translating policy into action and delivering results for the nation,” he said.
Prime Minister Marape reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting UOG and other educational institutions across the country.
“We recognize that education is a critical priority for our nation’s future. The University of Goroka is an important institution that trains our future teachers, and it is our duty to ensure that they have the resources and infrastructure needed to succeed.”
He also confirmed that the Government has allocated K30 million to UOG to complete several key infrastructure projects, including a seven-storey building and a new auditorium.
“I look forward to returning later this year to officially open the seven-storey building and the auditorium, which are expected to be completed with the government funding already allocated. These new facilities will further enhance the university’s capacity to accommodate more students and provide a better learning environment.”
Prime Minister Marape concluded by expressing his gratitude to the UOG leadership for their dedication to improving education in Papua New Guinea.
“The university leadership is delivering results with the little resources given to them. Their efforts are contributing to building a stronger education system, and we are committed to supporting them as they continue to serve our nation by preparing the next generation of educators.”

PM PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE LATE SIR CHARLES LEPANI
Prime Minister James Marape has expressed deep sorrow at the passing of late Sir Charles Watson Lepani, KBE CBE OBE, a distinguished statesman, diplomat, and pioneer of Papua New Guinea’s post independence era.
Sir Charles passed away on Friday, January 10, 2025, in Port Moresby, surrounded by his wife, Lady Katherine Lepani, and son, Nathaniel Lepani, after a battle with stage four cancer.
Prime Minister Marape said, “Sir Charles Lepani’s passing comes at a time when Papua New Guinea is preparing to celebrate 50 years of independence, making this loss even more significant.
“Sir Charles was one of our most distinguished leaders who played a pivotal role in shaping PNG’s economic, social, and diplomatic policies in the years following independence. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Papua New Guineans.
“He was part of PNG’s renowned ‘Gang of Four,’ alongside Sir Mekere Morauta, Sir Anthony Siaguru, and Sir Rabbie Namaliu — a group of visionary thinkers who helped craft the foundations of PNG’s governance, economy, and foreign policy during the country’s formative years.”
Born on October 28, 1947, Sir Charles was a proud Trobriand Islander from Milne Bay Province, whose cultural roots anchored his lifelong dedication to public service.
Prime Minister Marape highlighted Sir Charles’s pioneering roles in nation-building:
“Following independence in 1975, Sir Charles became PNG’s first Director of the National Planning Office, where he helped shape development strategies for equitable growth. He went on to serve in key diplomatic roles, including PNG’s Ambassador to the European Union and High Commissioner to Australia, strengthening PNG’s international relations.
“His leadership during PNG’s hosting of the 2018 APEC Summit as Director-General of the APEC Authority showcased his exceptional management and diplomatic skills. More recently, he chaired the Eminent Persons Group, developing PNG’s Foreign Policy White Paper, a document that will guide our future foreign engagements.”
The Prime Minister said Sir Charles was a fierce advocate for equitable development.
“Sir Charles always believed that the benefits of PNG’s progress should reach all Papua New Guineans. His calm demeanor, wisdom, and humility earned him respect both at home and abroad, and his contributions to our nation’s growth will never be forgotten.
“As we approach 50 years of independence, we remember and honor the generation of leaders like Sir Charles who laid the foundation for our nation’s development. His legacy is a reminder of what true leadership and service to the nation look like.”
Prime Minister Marape extended his condolences to Lady Katherine Lepani, Nathaniel Lepani, and the entire Lepani family.
“Sir Charles’s life was one of selfless service and dedication to Papua New Guinea. His remarkable legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Rest in peace, Sir Charles. Your work for Papua New Guinea will never be forgotten.”

ALL PNG CITIZENS TO REGISTER WITH NID BY 16 SEPTEMBER: PM
Under Prime Minister James Marape’s directive, all Papua New Guinean nationals must register with their national identification by September 16, 2025.
PM Marape also directed that the National Youth Authority open and maintain a 24-hour call centre for the nation’s youth; and that all young Papua New Guineans forced out of the school system utilise the Facility for Open Distant Education (FODE) to complete their education.
The Prime Minister made known the policy directions on Friday 10th, January during the launching of the inaugural PNG Youth Resource Week (YRW) in Port Moresby before a crowd of youth at Sir John Guise Stadium.
The YRW was launched to create a platform of information and connection for the young men and women of the country caught out of the school system and the formal sector.
It will work at linking the youth to the Marape-Rosso Government programs and initiatives such as FODE and TVET in Education; MSME, Labour Mobility, and recruitment into the disciplinary forces in Business and Employment; in Sports; and Arts & Culture.
The YRW launched on Friday 10 January 2025, to coincide with the first anniversary of ‘Black Wednesday’ – the rampage and looting of businesses in Port Moresby last year 2024.
This was to drive messages of strength and positive change among the youth.
A full exposition will be held a month later in February where government agencies and private sector partners will be present to demonstrate services they have on offer for the youth and assist them to open up the links.
The initiative is the Government’s response to addressing the escalating youth bulge in the country by connecting the young people for the existing programs initiative Marape-led Government since 2019.
PM Marape called on government agencies led by the Department of Community Development Religion and Youth, and Department of Education to do more in creating clear and accessible pathways for the young people where they can easily access the available programs.
He said, “We have many programs in education, skills training, small business development and labour mobility but they are not reaching you, our youth. Government agencies are failing to make these opportunities visible, accessible, and understandable so you can benefit from them. This will change now because you are very important for the future of our country."
“Keep a look out for FODE which you can register in to complete your education. It will be at no costs at all to you as your government is paying for the fees. We also have SME; we have labour mobility; you can make money in agriculture; you can play sports and rugby league; you can make music and paint.”
“All our young men must rise up and protect our women and girls and secure our communities."
"Have hope. Feel energised. Reclaim your identity as Christian Melanesian Papua New Guineans and together we can build a better country,” said Prime Minister Marape.
PM Marape made a call out to all youths to avail themselves at the YRW expo in February when it opens in Port Moresby and other centres when the YRW is moving around the country.

PM CALLS FOR RENEWED PUBLIC SERVICE DEDICAITON
As Papua New Guinea commemorates its 50th year of independence, Prime Minister James Marape has urged public personnel nationwide to take on the responsibility of providing the country with improved services.
His remarks follow a visit to his electorate in Tari-Pori, where he met dedicated frontline public servants working in Hela Province.
During his visit, the Prime Minister was moved to see several coastal families — doctors and other professionals — who have left the comfort of their home provinces to serve the people of Hela. He acknowledged their sacrifice and praised their commitment to nation-building.
“These public servants are an inspiration,” Prime Minister Marape said.
“They have chosen service over comfort, working in some of the most challenging areas of our country. Their dedication reminds us that public service is a noble duty, one that requires commitment, sacrifice, and a deep sense of responsibility.”
The Prime Minister stressed that frontline workers across the country — including doctors, teachers, police officers, and administrators — need greater support from government agencies and senior officials based in Waigani.
“We who are in head offices must rise to the occasion. Our work must be efficient and effective, ensuring that those on the front lines have the tools, resources, and support to carry out their duties. We must break the habits of complacency and serve with renewed purpose.”
Looking ahead to the Public Service Dedication Ceremony on January 10, Prime Minister Marape urged all public servants to reflect on their roles and responsibilities. He reminded them that they are paid with taxpayers’ money to serve the people and must work tirelessly to meet the needs of the nation.
“As we dedicate the year 2025 to public service, I ask every public servant, both elected and appointed, to reflect on your service to our country. Let us be the catalysts of positive change. Let us rise together for PNG.”
Prime Minister Marape also took a moment to honor the legacy of past public servants who have contributed to the country’s development over the past five decades.
“To those who have served Papua New Guinea faithfully over the past 50 years, we thank you. Your work has laid the foundation of our nation. Now, it is our duty to build on that foundation and serve our people better.”
The Prime Minister emphasised that true nation-building requires collective action from all levels of public service. He called for a renewed commitment from everyone in government to leave behind personal comfort and serve the country with pride and purpose.
“Don’t wait for someone else to do it — it starts with you and me. Together, we can ensure that Papua New Guinea continues to grow and prosper for the next 50 years.”
