Police in the National Capital District have dismissed claims circulating on social media about an ongoing eviction at Erima Wildlife, saying no such operation is currently underway.Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police for NCD and Central, Benjamin Turi, clarified that police are not carrying out any eviction and are waiting for the rightful land title holder to engage with authorities before any action is taken. He explained that police do not initiate evictions but only provide security when lawful court orders are presented by landowners requesting assistance. “We only act when the rightful person requests our service with proper court orders. Otherwise, we continue with our normal duties,” he said. Turi also raised concern over false information being shared online, describing it as misleading and not coming from police leadership. He stressed that such claims could cause unnecessary fear and confusion among the public. National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab supported the statement, confirming that the information circulating is not from him or police command and should not be treated as official. He said all police actions are directed through proper leadership channels and must follow lawful processes. Rabaul District in East New Britain Province, has officially launched its five-year Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) Plan 2026-2030.The plan was officially launched by the Minister for National Planning, Sir Ano Pala, at Malaguna Technical Secondary School Hall in Rabaul town on April 8, 2026. The occasion was attended by Member for Rabaul Dr Allan Marat, ENB Governor Michael Marum, Minister for Fisheries Jelta Wong, National Planning and Monitoring Department Secretary Koney Samuel, National WaSH Program Coordinator Reichert Thanda, DNPM Technical Advisor Secretary Takele Tuna, ENB Provincial Administrator Levi Mano, WaterAID PNG Country Director Annemarie Paul, ENB Provincial Health Authority Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Ako Yap, district leaders and stakeholders. Minister Pala highlighted that the WaSH Plan reflects the Government’s firm commitment to delivering essential services through strategic, evidence-based planning. “This is not just the unveiling of a plan- it is a clear demonstration of our political will to place water, sanitation, and hygiene at the centre of national development,” he said. The Minister said there is an urgent need for action, noting that only 42 percent of Papua New Guineans have access to basic drinking water, while just nineteen percent have access to basic sanitation. He said the Rabaul District WaSH Plan aligns with the Medium-Term Development Plan IV (2023-2027), the National WaSH Policy (2015-2030), and Sustainable Development Goal 6. Minister Pala said as part of broader sector reforms, the Government is progressing the establishment of the National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Authority (NWSHA) through a draft bill expected to be tabled in Parliament later this year. He also announced that Rabaul is the first district to receive a fully funded WaSH project under the Department of National Planning and Monitoring, with an allocation of K3.7 million. Implementation efforts are already underway, including feasibility studies and ongoing projects such as the Matupit WaSH Project. The Minister issued a strong call to action to all stakeholders to commence implementation, scale the Rabaul model nationwide and deliver sustainable, people-oriented outcomes. At the same time Member for Rabaul, Dr Allan Marat called on local and provincial authorities to read the plan and contribute to its effectiveness by way of implementation. “It is your responsibility to read and understand the plan, align your local priorities and integrate your strategies into respective development agendas.”

A routine baggage check at Jacksons International Airport has led to the interception of more than 20 kilograms of marijuana, highlighting the growing strength of airport security in Papua New Guinea.The National Airports Corporation (NAC) Aviation Security team, working closely with Air Niugini security and airport police, detected the illicit drugs during screening at the Port Moresby International Airport domestic terminal on Sunday, April 5, 2026. The drugs were found in the baggage of a passenger arriving on a flight from Tari. After further screening and physical inspection, the substance was confirmed to be marijuana weighing 20.2 kilograms. The passenger, a 42-year-old man, was immediately taken into custody and handed over to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary National Drug Squad for further investigation. Authorities say the successful interception shows the importance of strong security systems and teamwork between agencies. Constant monitoring, strict screening, and quick coordination played a key role in stopping the drugs from entering the community. Acting Managing Director of the National Airports Corporation, Dominic Kaumu, praised the officers for their efforts, saying their work continues to protect the country’s borders. “Our officers have shown strong vigilance and professionalism in recent operations,” he said. He added that in recent days, Aviation Security teams have also intercepted cases involving gold smuggling and undeclared ammunition, with those matters referred to relevant authorities. Madang has recorded its first-ever conviction for chewing betel nut (buai) in a public place.A bank branch manager from Bunabun village was caught chewing betel nut while driving on Modilon Road on the 24th of March. Police saw him at the Vango Road crossing with his window down.He admitted the offence. He was arrested and charged under the Summary Offences Act 2018. He was released on K400 police bail.On Tuesday 7th April, the court fined him K400. His bail payment was used to cover the fine. He was cautioned and then released.Madang Provincial Police Commander, Superintendent Robert Baim said the case sets a precedent.“This is a landmark decision. Chewing buai in public is now an offence and will be enforced. The law protects everyone, no matter their status,” he said.Baim said the case shows stronger rules for public health and safety in Madang.

It is official, the first Papua New Guinea Defence Force ({NGDF) recruitment training for 2026 is now cancelled after the disbandment of the Directorate of Recruiting at the headquarters at Murray Barracks in Port Moresby city.The Chief of Defence Force (CDF) Rear Admiral Philip Polewara confirmed this in a statement, saying the disbanding of the Directorate of Recruiting, followed the commencement of a review initiated by MP Dr. Billy Joseph before he stepped aside as Minister for Defence. “These actions are necessary to ensure we effectively review the recruitment process,” said the CDF. The review of the PNGDF’s recruitment system commenced yesterday, led by the Deputy CDF Force Brigadier General, Lari Opa. Since 2023, PNGDF has carried out institutional reforms, reviewing and overhauling its systems such as the moving of payroll control to Murray Barracks. The PNGDF has been running on systems that are over 50 years old, and it is evident those systems have outlived their time. With the recruitment review, General Opa will oversee the development and operationalism of a fit for purpose system. “One option we will look into is of integrating our system with that of the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology in order for us to recruit directly from secondary schools,” said CDF Rear Admiral Polewara. Meanwhile, Prime Minister James Marape has assumed full responsibility for the Defence Ministry following the decision by Dr Billy Joseph to step aside. The National Government is now moving swiftly to investigate serious concerns surrounding recruitment processes at Murray Barracks.

The police and Road Traffic Authority (RTA) operations to crackdown on unregistered and un- roadworthy vehicles in Port Moresby continues and today, over 30 of such vehicles have been taken off the road.The National Capital District (NCD) Metropolitan Superintendent Warrick Simatab has praised the police officers and the Road Traffic Authority for their efforts in impounding 39 defective vehicles at the impounding yard at Eight Mile today. Simatab confirmed that the vehicles were sighted around the city, and the drivers were arrested while the vehicles were taken to the impounding yard. He said that in some instances, drivers escaped, leaving the vehicles, which the police tow truck assisted in towing to the impounding yard. He stated that since the operation began, there has been a significant change in the city. He said the police and other enforcement agencies will continue arresting and impounding vehicles if they are caught on public streets. He said so far, 22 defective PMV buses, 9 taxis and 8 private vehicles were impounded. "I want to call on all vehicle owners to adhere to traffic laws. If you are caught violating one or more, you will be arrested and charged. If the offense warrants us to impound your vehicle at the impounding yard, we will do so, giving you time to fix your car before we release it back on the road. Otherwise, it is best to keep your vehicle at home, get it fixed, and then drive it on the road," Met. Supt Simatab said. He also called on vehicle owners to check their vehicles before putting them on hire or driving them themselves on public streets. He said that if they are ignorant, the enforcement agencies will deal with them.

The shortage of buses and taxis coupled with the increase in fuel prices has seen public transport operators lifting their fares above the approved fares by the country’s consumer watchdog, prompting it to bark a warning to operators.According to the Independent Consumer and Competitions Commission (ICCC), the current operation carried out by the police and the Road Traffic Authority (RTA) in cracking down on unregistered and unroadworthy vehicles in Port Moresby city, has seen the number of Public Motor Vehicles (PMVs) and taxis reduced. This has led to the others still operating to take advantage of the situation and illegally increase their fares. “In light of this, all licensed PMV and taxi owners and operators currently providing services must strictly comply with the maximum approved fares, as published by the ICCC in National Gazette No. G21 of 9th January 2026. The ICCC has already factored in the full costs of compliance with safety and other statutory requirements when setting the fares,” the ICCC stated. The Police and RTA are currently undertaking random inspections at designated bus stops and on the major roads. Any operator found to be in breach of any rules and regulations administered by the RTA, Police, and the ICCC, will be heavily penalized. The ICCC reiterates that any operator found to be charging above the approved fares is unlawful and may be prosecuted under the Prices Regulation (Amendment) Act 2025 (‘PR Act’). Offenders may be prosecuted and, upon conviction, face maximum monetary penalties of up to K10,000 for summary offences and up to K30,000 for indictable offences. The ICCC further urges all commuters to be aware of the approved fares and report any instances of overcharging or failure by operators to complete their licensed routes to the ICCC, Police, and/or RTA. Patients in Bogia district in Madang province are being turned away or referred elsewhere as the main health centre struggles to provide even basic treatment.At Bogia Health Centre, staff say they cannot stabilize patients due to lack of essential medicines.Acting program health manager Sr Christine Akuram said the situation is affecting patient care every day.“Many patients come with severe infections, but we cannot help them,” she said.“We don’t even have basic drugs to stabilize them.”This means patients who could be treated locally are instead sent to other facilities.Families must travel long distances. Many cannot afford the cost.Health workers say the problem has been ongoing for more than a year.“There has been no proper medicine supply,” Sr Akuram said.The impact is also seen inside the facility.Some staff are losing motivation, with reports of officers taking time off as they are unable to treat patients.At the same time, demand for services remains high.Serious cases continue to arrive daily, placing pressure on the limited staff.Testing services are also affected.The centre has a microscope but no trained lab technician. This means samples must be sent away for testing, delaying results for up to two weeks.Despite the challenges, some services continue.Tuberculosis treatment is still available, although supplies are limited. Health workers say some patients fail to complete treatment, leading to repeat infections.The wider health system is also under strain.Many aid posts in remote areas are closed due to lack of staff. One health centre in the district is not operating.Transport remains a major barrier.“We need vehicles to reach our communities,” Sr Akuram said.She said outreach programs such as immunization and disease control are affected.Health officials are now calling for urgent support.“We need drugs,” she said.“We must find ways to get medicines to our people.”
