PAULIANA VITALE: A VOICE FOR THE PACIFIC AT THE PACIFIC FASHION SUMMIT
When Miss American Samoa 2024–2025, Pauliana Angelfromheaven Felise Vitale, steps onto the stage in Port Moresby, she'll be walking more than a runway, she will be walking a bridge.
Vitale is set to participate in the prestigious Pacific Fashion Summit and Genesis Showcase hosted by PNG Fashion Week. Two landmark events celebrating the rich cultural heritage and creativity of the Pacific Islands.
For Vitale, a vibrant leader and accomplished scholar, this opportunity is a chance to elevate the Pacific voice on a global stage.
“Pacific fashion is storytelling. It is how we wear our history, our pride, and our vision for the future.”
“The Pacific Fashion Summit and Genesis are proof that our traditions can inspire the world, and that the Pacific voice belongs at the global table.”
Born and raised in American Samoa, Vitale's life is a testament to the values of family and community.
“I was raised by two sets of parents who have passed on. My family is my foundation. Everything I do, I carry them with me.”
This deep-rooted connection to her heritage has fueled her academic and leadership pursuits. Vitale holds a Bachelor of Arts in Historical and Political Studies with a minor in English from Chaminade University of Honolulu.
During her time there, she was a fierce advocate for her culture, serving as President of the Lumana'i O Samoa Cultural Club, Vice President of the English Honor Society, and Head of Internal Affairs for the Student Government.
Her commitment to service extends beyond the university campus. As a volunteer program facilitator for a literacy initiative in Hawaii, she shared the stories and folklore of Samoa and the Pacific with inner-city children.
“Our stories are more than history; they are our heartbeat.”
Vitale's compassion for her community is also at the heart of her official platform as Miss American Samoa. She founded Faasoa Mai, an initiative dedicated to creating safe spaces for young people to discuss mental wellness.
“Our young people need to know it’s okay to talk, to feel, and to ask for help. Conversations are the first step toward resilience.”
Her poise and authenticity have already garnered regional acclaim. At the 2025 Miss Pacific Islands Pageant, she was named second runner-up and received the Best Talent and Personality in Tourism awards.
She cherishes the experience not just for the accolades, but for the chance to connect with fellow titleholders and celebrate the diversity of the Pacific.
Meanwhile, the Pacific Fashion Summit and Genesis Showcase, made possible by official air carrier Air Niugini, will bring together cultural creatives from across the region.
The events are designed to be a living declaration of Pacific identity, creativity, and unity.
For Vitale, being a part of this event is more than a professional milestone; it is a powerful statement about the future.
As she represents American Samoa on this international stage, she is connecting the rich heritage of the past with the limitless possibilities of the future.
She embodies the vibrant spirit of the Pacific, proving that its traditions can indeed inspire the world.

SCHOOLS IN MADANG EMBRACE COCOA FARMING THROUGH PACD PROJECT
More than 600 cocoa seedlings have been delivered to three schools in Madang Province as part of the PNG Agriculture Commercialization and Diversification Program (PACD), a National Government initiative supported by the World Bank.
Karkar Secondary School, Anul Lutheran High School, and Kabilmas Primary School in Sumkar District are now joining over 500 individual cocoa farmers under the Biabi Enterprise Limited PACD Cocoa Productive Partnership. Biabi Enterprise, based on Karkar Island, acts as a lead partner and intermediary, supporting farmers to implement a K1 million cocoa rehabilitation project.
PACD Project Management Unit Productive Partnership Officer for the Momase region, Francis Ulangian, commended the schools for showing initiative in integrating cocoa farming into school activities.
“The resilience and determination of these schools is inspiring. They are teaching students that agriculture can be a viable and rewarding path, even while in school,”
Alongside the seedlings, schools also received cocoa toolkits, including spades, bush knives, knapsack sprayers, and pole pruners, to equip them for hands-on learning and productivity.
Other PACD partnerships in Madang include Kulili Estate on Karkar Island and NGO Promotional Incorporation, each supporting 500 farmers. All received cocoa seedlings and essential farming tools.
“This is a milestone occasion. The tools and seedlings are not just resources. They are a boost of hope and confidence that will help farmers increase productivity and strengthen market stability.”
Meanwhile, Peter Sumaiang, of Biabi Assistance Project, acknowledged that while some had doubts at the start, those who believed in the project are now seeing results.
“In the next three to four years, cocoa production in Karkar Island and Madang will increase significantly as more people join the industry.”
The partnerships will also benefit from cocoa combination solar dryers, resource centers, and chemical storage sheds.
Construction of fermentaries is already underway, with Madang Technical College’s Welding and Drafting Department engaged for the work.

PNGUOT SRS RESPONDS TO VIRAL VIDEO, INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY
The Student Representative Senate (SRS) of the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (PNGUOT) is now well aware of the recent viral video that is in circulation due to recent happenings on campus and condemns such behavior.
In a recent statement, the SRS has provided clarification regarding the recent incident captured in the video; the individual involved is not a registered female student at the University.
The situation began with a verbal confrontation between her and a male student as she attempted to enter the first-year dormitory without authorization.
In response, she was escorted to the library under the assumption that she was a student, in order to facilitate her departure from the male dormitory.
However, the actions of the particular student caught harassing the woman in the video is not tolerated.
The SRS and the University does not condone but condemn such actions.
Investigation is already underway, and all evidence and information has been submitted to student services to bring to the right authorities, University Security Disciplinary Committee (USDC) and the police for charges and penalties to be given to the culprit.
The male students have expressed their sentiments around 2AM on the 10th of August 2025, at the first and final year dormitories, that such action is not accepted and want to reassure the SAFETY of their female colleagues.
The Student Representative Senate (SRS) stands firmly for the safety and respect of all students-both male and female at the PNGUOT.
“We do not tolerate harassment of any kind, and those who act inappropriately will face serious consequences.”

LEADERS DEMAND ACTION REGARDING UNITECH INCIDENT
East Sepik Governor Allan Bird and University of Technology Chancellor Mr. Sam Koim, have condemned the harassment of a female student by a group of male students at the university campus, after a viral video of the incident sparked public outrage.
The incident occurred in the lead-up to Papua New Guinea’s 50th Independence anniversary and has reignited calls for stronger protections for women in higher education.
According to the footage, the unidentified female student was walking on campus when she was followed and surrounded by a mob of male students.
The group engaged in inappropriate verbal remarks and physical contact, with bystanders attempting to intervene.
Security personnel were later alerted, and the student was escorted to safety.
The disturbing scene, filmed by another student, quickly spread on social media, prompting swift condemnation from leaders.
Governor Bird, who also serves as Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Gender Equity and Women's Empowerment, described the incident as ‘deeply disturbing’ and evidence of declining moral standards in PNG.
He said men have a duty to protect women and girls, not harm or humiliate them, and called on the University Council to urgently identify and discipline those involved.
“What we saw is unacceptable. If this is the attitude of our young men, then PNG has indeed gone backwards.”
“If our universities cannot instill respect for women, then we are failing as a society.”
Meanwhile, Chancellor Koim also condemned the behavior, stating that such actions have no place at Unitech.
He described the conduct as ‘animalistic’ and stressed that the university stands for excellence and aims to produce civilized, respectful graduates.
Koim confirmed that a full investigation has been launched and warned that those found guilty of misconduct will face consequences ‘without exception.’
He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining a safe and dignified learning environment for all students.
The incident has sparked renewed debate on the enforcement of student conduct policies and the promotion of gender respect in PNG’s universities.
Both Bird and Koim stressed that addressing such behavior is critical to upholding the nation’s values and protecting its young women.

Prime Minister of New Zealand, Christopher Luxon, paid a special visit to Port Moresby General Hospital on Tuesday, 5th August, where he toured the construction site of the Papua New Guinea Centre for Eye Health; a vital facility currently taking shape through the support of the Fred Hollows Foundation NZ.
The visit formed part of Prime Minister Luxon’s official program in Papua New Guinea, reflecting New Zealand’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the health partnership between the two Pacific neighbors.
“New Zealand is incredibly proud to contribute to this national centre which will help to address the eye health needs facing Papua New Guinea, which has one of the highest rates of blindness globally.”
“This is one of the largest investments in eye care globally through official development assistance.”
“Together, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fred Hollows and other donor partners are establishing a purpose-built national facility for eye health. One that will actually enable the training of health professionals and the delivery of surgical care.”
“The centre will also help address gender disparities in access to eye care, which disproportionately affect women and girls.”
“This investment is part of New Zealand’s broader and longstanding commitment to improving health in Papua New Guinea.”
“Health is currently our largest sector of development cooperation.”
Meanwhile, Papua New Guinea’s Health Minister, Elias Kapavore, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to promoting eye care as a vital component of public health.
He noted that once completed, the PNG Centre for Eye Health will train eye doctors, nurses, and ophthalmologists, helping to build a robust eye care workforce.

Minister Kapavore expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Fred Hollows Foundation NZ and acknowledged Prime Minister Luxon’s continued support.
Also speaking was Doctor Paki Molumi, Chief Executive Officer of Port Moresby General Hospital, who highlighted the evolving partnership between New Zealand and Papua New Guinea in the health sector.

POLICE STEP UP SECURITY AS ROAD CARNAGE CLAIMS 10 LIVES IN 3 DAYS
Minister for Police, Peter Tsiamalili Jnr, has called on drinkers to refrain from overindulging, and for businesses involved in the production and sale of alcohol to invest some of their profits into reducing deaths caused by drunkards.
The Minister made the appeal as the country prepares to celebrate the 50th anniversary of independence, and following a horror weekend of tragic alcohol-related incidents.
“As Papua New Guinea approaches its 50th Independence Anniversary, the government is taking urgent action to address rising alcohol-related violence and road fatalities, especially in the National Capital District (NCD).”
“Over the past weekend alone, between the 46th, 45th and 44th days to Independence, a total of ten people tragically lost their lives in alcohol-related incidents, mostly from vehicle accidents.”
“This sharp rise in avoidable deaths has triggered an immediate response from the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC).”
“To ensure public safety during the lead-up to Independence Day, the Government has authorized the activation of more than 700 police reserve personnel to reinforce law and order across Port Moresby, alongside intensified deployments of regular officers.”
“We cannot stand by as our roads become killing grounds. Our celebrations must not be marred by senseless loss of life.”
He strongly stated that ten lives lost in just three days is unacceptable. Alcohol-fueled recklessness is killing people, and the government is responding with decisive action.”
ENHANCED POLICE RESPONSE PLAN:
• Tougher enforcement of drink-driving laws under the Road Traffic Act;
• Restrictions on alcohol sales, especially during night hours and weekends;
• Crackdown on illegal liquor outlets and homebrew suppliers;
• Nationwide public awareness campaigns targeting drink-driving and alcohol abuse; and,
• Review of penalties under the Liquor Act and Cyber Crime Code Act to reflect the seriousness of alcohol-related offences.
The Minister, who is also the Acting Minister for Information Communications and Technology, further delivered a direct call to all alcohol manufacturers, distributors, and licensed vendors to be part of the solution in reducing violence and deaths.
“It is wrong for businesses to profit from alcohol sales while turning a blind eye to the destruction their products cause.”
“Those involved in the liquor business must step up and join us in promoting responsible drinking. Some of these businesses are already active in supporting awareness campaigns, and this is appreciated, but other have to step-up.”
“We expect the alcohol industry to fund and support campaigns, display responsible drinking warnings on products and advertisements, and engage in real community awareness.”
“As Acting Communications Minister, I am directing greater engagement between the department with business and media outlets to work together to deal with this pressing issue.”
He further stated that the upcoming 50th Independence Anniversary should be a time of pride, unity, and reflection, not mourning and funerals.
“The safety of our people is non-negotiable. If you drink and drive, you will be caught. If you break the law, you will be held accountable.”
“Let us celebrate Independence with dignity and responsibility. Let these next 44 days set a national example of unity, not tragedy.”

ALL MAJOR DOMESTIC AIRPORTS TO ACCOMMODATE NEW AIRBUS A220
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air Niugini, Mr. Gary Seddon, has announced that comprehensive technical studies undertaken by the aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, have confirmed that all fifteen airports currently served by the Fokker fleet can accommodate the incoming A220 aircraft.
The Airbus A220 Pavement Compatibility Study of Papua New Guinea Airports has declared that the Airbus A220 is capable of operating across all current Air Niugini domestic jet routes.
“Airbus and Air Niugini have thoroughly evaluated the performance of both the A220-100 and A220-300 models and confirmed these aircraft can serve every airport where our Fokker 70s and 100s operate.”
“This is very good information for our travelling public who will have more comfortable flights that are on-time and more efficient.”
“Our new A220s can land at existing PNG domestic airports according to safe International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) compliance conditions.”
The relevant data has been conveyed to the National Airports Corporation (NAC), and other stakeholders of Air Niugini, who are all working together to ensure that the transition to the new Air Niugini fleet is a success.
The replacement of the Fokker fleet with Airbus A220s will be a massive change for Air Niugini. The first of these aircraft arrives in September this year.
In addition, as the Fokker aircraft have aged, maintenance costs have escalated, and replacement parts often require time to order, causing flight delays and disruptions.
“Due to infrastructure limitations at certain domestic airports in PNG, it will be necessary to apply specific flight restrictions to some A220 operations.”
“In instances where payload or fuel limits are required, flight operations will be adjusted accordingly to maintain full compliance with safety and performance standards.”
“These restrictions are expected to affect only a small number of routes operating into shorter or lower-strength runways.”
Ultimately, the A220’s superior efficiency and performance means that even at a reduced weight it can carry out flights that meet or exceed what the Fokkers could achieve from those airports.
“This is an exciting time for aviation in Papua New Guinea, which has been a long time in coming following talk of replacing the Fokkers for nearly two decades, and now we are making it happen.”
“Passenger and freight costs will reduce, and importantly, we will get flight schedules running on time because we have new and reliable aircraft.”
Meanwhile, the domestic airports into which the A220 can operate are as follows:
- POM / AYPY-Port Moresby
- LAE / AYNZ-Lae Nadzab Tomodachi
-KVG / AYKV-Kavieng
-MAS / AYMO-Manus (Momote)
- GUR / AYGN-Alotau (Gurney)
-HGU / AYMH-Mt Hagen (Kagamuga)
RAB / AYTK-Rabaul (Tokua)
- VAI / AYVN-Vanimo
-BUA / AYBK-Buka
-GKA / AYGA-Goroka
-HKN / AYHK -Kimbe (Hoskins)
-WWK / AYWK-Wewak
-MAG / AYMD-Madang
-KIE / AYIQ -Kieta
Furthermore, all international destinations currently serviced by Air Niugini Fokker and Boeing aircraft will accommodate the Airbus A220.
