The 2026 Papua New Guinea National Rugby League (PNG NRLC) season has officially concluded following a thrilling Grand Final weekend that celebrated not only exceptional rugby but also the spirit of community, sportsmanship, and positivity that reinforce the sport in the country.

From the Santos Cup Grand Final to the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup decider, supporters turned out in large numbers to cheer on their teams and be part of what has become one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year.

The PNG NRLC has commended fans for their conduct, noting that their passion for the game was matched by a respect for players, officials, and fellow supporters.

Chairman of PNG NRLC, Adrian Chow has commended the manner in which supporters conducted themselves throughout the Grand finals despite the negative support and comment that were circulating the social media in the lead up week.

“Their behavior contributed to a positive and enjoyable atmosphere at the venue and allowed families, players, and supporters to celebrate the occasion (in the true spirit of the game) together,” Chow said.

He also extended his gratitude to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, security personnel, and event security teams who worked tirelessly, showing professionalism and vigilance to ensure a safe and orderly environment throughout the weekend.

Reflecting on the season’s success, Chow emphasized the collective effort involved.

“The Grand Final weekend was a great reflection of what rugby league can be when everyone plays their part. We saw passionate supporters come out to back their teams, while our police and security personnel worked hard to ensure everyone could enjoy the occasion in a safe environment.”

He further expressed appreciation to all those behind the scenes, including audio-visual officials, match officials, medical teams, venue staff, volunteers, and technical crews. Their combined efforts ensured a memorable and seamless Grand Final weekend.

On the field, the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup produced an exciting climax as the Agmark Rabaul Gurias Warriors claimed the 2026 premiership with a 26–14 victory over the PRK Mendi Muruks.

The Santos Cup Grand Final also highlighted the growth of the women’s rugby league, with players and teams showcasing the sport’s continued development.

“The PNG NRLC congratulates all participating franchises, players, coaches, and officials for their dedication throughout the season and for contributing to the ongoing growth of rugby league in Papua New Guinea,” Chow said.

PNG NRLC also expressed gratitude to its sponsors, including Digicel and ExxonMobil PNG for their ongoing support of the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup, and Santos for its investment in women’s rugby league through the Santos Cup.
