BIGGEST SURRENDER IN YANGORU- SAUSIA
In what was described as the biggest surrender in the Yangoru- Sausia district of the East Sepik province, a large number of youths turned in their guns, homebrew making equipment and even themselves to police just recently.
The youths from the Kwarabri village of East Yangoru Local Level Government (LLG) surrendered and made peace with the police on Friday 01st September, witnessed by the local Member of Parliament and Minister for International Trade and Investment, Richard Maru.
The youths led by Paramount Chief, Joseph Legimani, surrendered two gas bottles for brewing steam, 21 guns, and 24 people to the police. From the 24 people, one was an escapee and 23 were suspects who were involved in the clash with police, four of whom were women. They also gave K2, 000 to the police as an apology for the clash.
According to State Lawyer, Enoch Manihambu, it took him and the leaders of Kwarabri about two months to convince these 24 people to surrender, and also to have the village to surrender their guns.
Because of the gun battle incident between the youths from Kwarabri and the police, the Yangoru-Saussia District Development Authority (DDA) brought over Mobile Squad 15 from Bulolo in Morobe Province, who have been doing a very good job so far.
“We had to bring the Mobile Squad because of the issue that you created. It did not cost us thousands but millions of Kina. The funds for other services and developments for the district is being diverted into law-and-order. So, be serious about this surrender and peace program. I do not want to hear of any more law-and-order issues in Kwarabri,” said Maru.
Mr. Maru also announced to the people of Kwarabri and everyone who gathered to attend the peace program that police officers will be here to stay.
“The first 16 rooms at the new Yangoru Mobile Barracks have been completed, so I have requested PPC (Provincial Police Commander) Superintendent Christopher Tamari for 16 new permanent troops for Yangoru-Saussia to be brought to the district so we can cut down on the cost of bringing in foreign troops.”
“We will have all 45 policemen and women in the district once all the houses in the Mobile Barracks are completed. This is part of our drive to bring down law-and-order issues in the district so we can bring in more services and attract investors to the district,” said Maru.
The MP also thanked the 24 people for doing the right thing by surrendering themselves to the police.
“Thank you for surrendering, you will now be in the custody of the police. The police are not allowed to beat any of you because you have done the right thing to surrender with the assurance that you will be dealt with properly. You will be taken by the police, processed, charged, and the court system will deal with you.”
Maru then encouraged other communities in the district to follow the fine example set by Kwarabri village.
“Let us clean-up Yangoru-Saussia and prepare ourselves to embrace new services and development, which the DDA and the National Government want to bring here," said Maru.

KPHL CONSTRUCTS NEW FABRICATION & TRAINING FACILITY
The Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (KPHL) is constructing a new fabrication and training facility to train Papua New Guineans to participate in future petroleum industry construction activities.
Construction of lay down and necessary associated site work, including services rights of way and site access roads, have now started after the construction contract was signed in July.
KPHL’s Corporate Affairs Executive General Manager, Luke Liria, in his presentation at the recent PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum CANCONEX conference in Lae said that KPHL as the country’s national petroleum and energy company, has a responsibility to drive development in this sector of the economy, and to provide direct financial benefits for the National Government and other stakeholders.
“Our objective is to capture a market share in the fabrication of large, high-value electrical and mechanical, electrical and piping modules for future petroleum and mining developments, renewable energy and general heavy industry projects, which up until now have all been imported from overseas,” he said.
“We recognize that the petroleum industry requires specialist trade skills not necessarily used by other industries in the country, skills that will increasingly be needed as petroleum projects come online.”
A training facility will be established adjacent to the fabrication facility to train and upskill Papua New Guineans, who will be required in large numbers in forthcoming LNG and other major developments in the country.
Mr. Liria said with Papua LNG projected to gain Final Investment Decision (FID) in 2024, followed by P’nyang LNG, it is necessary to train a cadre of Papua New Guineans with skills to participate in petroleum industry construction activities between now and 2032.
Construction academy graduates will have trade skills that will enable their employment in many of the forthcoming planned major resource and other projects in the country.
KPHL continues to support the national government’s effort to create employment and upskill the workforce of the country through its rural electrification programs and other projects around the country.

MARU SUPPORTS NEW TISA BANK
The Teachers Savings and Loans Society (TISA) Limited is in the process of establishing its own bank to service the communities in Papua New Guinea (PNG), something which certainly has the support of government.
Minister for International Trade and Investment, Richard Maru, said the establishment of a new bank in the country’s banking sector will go a long way in serving the people, especially in the rural areas, given the location of TISA branches already in many parts of the country.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TISA, Mr. Michael Koisen said they have applied for a banking license and the Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG) has given a conditional approval. They are hoping that a full license will be granted to TISA in the near future to do business in banking and serving the communities in PNG.
Minister Maru is supportive of TISA establishing its own bank to service the people, all because of the benefits this will have on the banking sector and the economy.
“Why is it exciting for us in government, because this will now mean one more bank, more competition, lower interest rates, lower banking fees, decrease in the number of unbanked, and making banking and financial services accessible,” said Minister Maru.
“But importantly, the Teachers Savings and Loans Society is owned by 70, 000 Papua New Guineans. This is an indigenous business, that’s what makes it extremely exciting. Clearly, when you migrate to a full bank, this bank will be owned by indigenous people of Papua New Guinea, this is what’s going to make this bank become unique.”
Minister Maru was also thankful for BPNG for granting the conditional approval and says they look forward to the granting of the new banking license.

Prime Minister (PM) James Marape has appealed to Papua New Guineans to observe National Repentance Day today and practice the deep Christian characteristic of forgiveness and tolerance to each other.

He urged the people to take the day seriously especially when the country is facing issues in terms of law and order, natural disasters, economic issues, social issues and developmental issues.
“We have many challenges, but we can do well if we can come in simple, humble character as a Christian should be. Forgive each other and say sorry to God for the mistakes we did.”

PNG JOINS MSG NATIONS TO STOP DEEP- SEA MINING
Prime Minister (PM) James Marape, upon arriving back in country from the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) meeting in Vanuatu, divulged information on some of the resolutions passed during the sub- regional group meeting, including on the matter of environmental impacts.
PM Marape said deep sea mining was one of topics that was discussed under the environmental impacts in the pacific and the Melanesian group of countries.
Marape said in this area, the leaders of the MSG agreed to not entertain any deep-sea mining until further proof is presented that there will be no environmental impacts to the marine environment and with it, the life it supports.
“In the event where there is to be deep sea mining, it must be consistent with safe environment practices,” said PM Marape.
“In the meantime, we issued a moratorium, including for PNG waters that there will be no deep-sea mining until further evidence suggests otherwise.”
Marape said the marine life must be protected for the future generation to enjoy and Papua New Guinea (PNG) as part of the greater Melanesia, supports this stance. He said with this resolution, deep sea mining is now also frozen in PNG waters in consistent with other pacific nations’ standings in this area.
Meanwhile, this is welcoming news for coastal communities in PNG where the talk of deep-sea mining has popped up again. This would mean any proposed mining activities offshore will not take place for the time being.
